Mumbai: Volkswagen India has taken another confident step on Indian roads with the commencement of local assembly of its most premium SUV yet – the Tayron R-Line. The seven-seater luxury SUV is now being assembled at the company’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant in Maharashtra, marking a major milestone in Volkswagen’s India growth story and making German engineering just a little more “Made in India”.
With production kicking off right on schedule, the Tayron R-Line is set to roll out in sync with its planned market launch in the first quarter of 2026. In simple terms: the SUV has officially entered its gym phase before making a grand public debut.
Speaking on the occasion, Piyush Arora, MD & CEO, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, said the start of production signals a strategic push in Volkswagen’s premium SUV portfolio. He highlighted that the Tayron R-Line reflects the brand’s customer-first approach, blending global engineering standards with Indian aspirations, and strengthening the company’s operational readiness for the evolving market.
Adding to this, Nitin Kohli, Brand Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, emphasized the brand’s belief in India’s appetite for premium German cars. He pointed out that the Tayron R-Line reaching Indian production within a year of its global debut showcases Volkswagen’s serious intent to make world-class models more accessible to Indian buyers.
Positioned as the flagship SUV in Volkswagen India’s lineup, the Tayron R-Line promises true seven-seater comfort, everyday usability and a sporty R-Line design that looks equally at home in a corporate parking lot or a weekend highway run. Think of it as a business-class lounge with alloy wheels.
With local assembly now underway, Volkswagen is clearly gearing up to play a bigger game in the premium SUV segment. And if everything goes as planned, Indian customers won’t just be driving a German SUV in 2026 – they’ll be driving one that was assembled right here, with global DNA and local ambition.
