Caught on Candid Camera: Bengaluru’s New AI Billboard Turns Traffic Violators into Accidental Celebrities

Bengaluru: In a first for India, CARS24, India’s leading AutoTech company, has teamed up with CrashFree India and the Bengaluru Traffic Police to launch an innovative AI-powered road safety billboard that’s giving traffic violators their very own moment in the spotlight — whether they like it or not.

Located at Trinity Circle, one of Bengaluru’s busiest intersections, the AI-enabled system uses number plate recognition to scan passing vehicles, match them against the government’s VAHAN database, and instantly display details of pending challans, expired insurance, or lapsed PUC certificates on a massive LED screen. Fully compliant motorists, on the other hand, get a quick “green light” moment of fame — a rare source of joy during rush hour.

👀 Real-Time Reactions: From Sheepish Glances to Mini Victory Fists

As the billboard flashes its findings in real time, the reactions have been nothing short of entertaining. Some drivers look up in embarrassment as their fines are broadcast to hundreds of onlookers. Others break into wide grins when the board declares them “all clear,” momentarily feeling like model citizens.

“It’s like that dreaded moment in school assembly when your name gets called out,” chuckled one commuter. “Only now, instead of forgetting your homework, it’s your challan history on a 20-foot LED screen.”

🧾 A ₹12,000 Crore Problem Meets Public Accountability

India currently faces a ₹12,000 crore challan backlog, with almost ₹9,000 crore unpaid. Bengaluru alone booked 8.29 million violations last year. Instead of issuing fresh fines, the AI billboard aims to solve the real problem — forgotten or ignored challans — by making them impossible to ignore.

“We are not just reminding people to clear challans or update documents. We’re reminding them that road safety starts with personal responsibility. Every responsible act, no matter how small, helps keep the city alive,” said Gajendra Jangid, Co-Founder & CMO, CARS24.

A senior official from Bengaluru Traffic Police added,

“This is not about shame, but awareness. Discipline starts with visibility. If this board helps even a fraction of drivers become more responsible, it’s a win for the city.”

🚦 Pilot Today, Nationwide Tomorrow?

The Trinity Circle installation is currently a pilot project. If successful, the initiative could roll out to other high-density junctions across major Indian cities. With its clever mix of technology, transparency, and a dash of social pressure, the AI billboard could become the newest enforcer on India’s roads — no uniform required.

So the next time you drive through Trinity Circle, don’t be surprised if your name (and fines) light up the sky. After all, in Bengaluru’s traffic theatre, even your challans are getting a front-row seat.
