Exter Makes South African Debut as Hyundai India Celebrates 20 Years of Exports

Gurugram — Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), India’s largest exporter of passenger vehicles by volume, has expanded its international portfolio by launching the Hyundai Exter in South Africa. This milestone coincides with HMIL’s 20th anniversary of exporting to the South African market, a relationship that began in 2004.

The Hyundai Exter, manufactured exclusively in India, is now the eighth model that HMIL exports to South Africa. It joins a lineup that includes the Grand i10 Nios, Aura, i20, i20 N Line, Venue, Venue N Line, and Alcazar. The company has already dispatched the first shipment of 996 units, marking a significant step in its global expansion strategy.

“South Africa has always been a crucial market for us,” said Jae Wan Ryu, Function Head of Corporate Planning at HMIL. “This year is particularly special as we commemorate two decades of delivering world-class products to South Africa. Our ‘Made in India, Made for the World’ philosophy underscores our manufacturing excellence. We are confident that the Hyundai Exter will replicate its success from India in the South African market.”

The Exter has been a strong performer in India, surpassing 100,000 units in sales within a year of its launch. In 2024, the model has become even more appealing with the introduction of Hy-CNG (Dual Cylinder CNG) and Knight Edition variants, maintaining its competitive edge in the dynamic Indian automotive sector.

HMIL’s latest move not only strengthens its position in the South African market but also highlights India’s growing influence as a global manufacturing hub for high-quality passenger vehicles.
