Toyota India Unveils Customized Hilux Trucks for High-Altitude Military Use at Himtech 2024

Leh, Ladakh—Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today unveiled specially modified versions of its iconic Hilux pickup truck at the Himtech 2024 symposium, an event co-hosted by the Indian Army and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI). Focused on leveraging military technology for high-altitude areas, the symposium aims to advance India’s self-reliance in defense capabilities.

Held at the Rinchen Auditorium Grounds in Leh over two days, the event attracted senior officials from the Army Commands, Air Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and other defense personnel, along with representatives from TKM.

TKM showcased two customized variants of the Hilux designed to meet the rigorous demands of military operations in challenging terrains:

  • Hilux Field Deployment Vehicle (FDV): This model emphasizes heavy-duty applications and has successfully completed trials with the Northern Command of the Indian Army. It’s tailored for tasks such as remote diagnostics, repair operations, and the transportation of supplies and spare parts in isolated locations.
  • Modified Hilux: Engineered for exceptional off-road performance, this variant features upgraded suspensions, specialized tires, and a snorkel, enabling it to navigate rugged and difficult terrains. These enhancements ensure reliability even under extreme conditions.

Last year, TKM participated in the North Tech Symposium organized by the Northern Command of the Indian Army, where it displayed the Hilux FDV and Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV). Following successful trials, TKM delivered a substantial fleet of Hilux trucks to the Indian Army and provided specialized training for drivers and technicians in off-road driving and vehicle maintenance.

Expressing his views on the occasion, V. Wiseline Sigamani, Vice President – Strategic Business Unit (North) of TKM, said, “We are honored to participate in Himtech 2024 and showcase the unique capabilities of our specially purposed Hilux models. These vehicles are a testament to Toyota’s commitment to developing customized solutions that meet the specific requirements of our customers, including the Indian Army. They have been engineered to tackle operational challenges such as navigating rough terrains, conducting patrols, and performing rescue operations during emergencies.”

The Hilux, now in its eighth generation and spanning over five decades, is renowned for its quality, durability, and reliability. Powered by a robust 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, it offers both 6-speed automatic and manual transmission options. With an impressive water-wading capacity of 700mm, the Hilux is well-suited for off-road adventures and demanding work environments.

Beyond military applications, the Hilux serves a wide range of industries, including agriculture, mining, and construction. Its versatility also makes it a popular choice for personal use, whether for business purposes or family adventures.

TKM’s participation in events like Himtech 2024 underscores its support for India’s pursuit of self-reliance in the defense sector by leveraging its technological expertise in mobility solutions.
