Ford Reignites Manufacturing Ambitions in Chennai, Eyes Global Export Push

Chennai, India – In a bold step towards expanding its international footprint, Ford has revealed plans to repurpose its Chennai manufacturing facility to focus on exports to global markets. The company submitted a Letter of Intent (LOI) to the Government of Tamil Nadu, underscoring its intention to make the plant a key player in Ford’s global supply chain.

This announcement came after high-level discussions between Ford executives and Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister during his recent visit to the United States. The revamped plant is set to play a crucial role in the company’s broader Ford+ growth strategy, aimed at strengthening its international reach through increased manufacturing capabilities.

“We deeply appreciate the continued support from the Tamil Nadu Government as we explored options for the Chennai facility,” said Kay Hart, President of Ford International Markets Group. “This decision is a testament to our commitment to India and the skilled manufacturing workforce here, which will be essential as we expand into new markets worldwide.”

Details about the specific manufacturing focus and timelines are yet to be disclosed, but this move signifies Ford’s long-term investment in India. The company already employs 12,000 people in Tamil Nadu, with plans to add 2,500–3,000 more jobs in the next three years. India now holds the position as Ford’s second-largest salaried workforce globally, following the company’s Sanand-based engine manufacturing operations.

Despite winding down domestic vehicle sales, Ford remains dedicated to supporting its one million customers in India through after-sales services, parts availability, and warranty support. This new initiative further strengthens the company’s relationship with India, positioning it as a vital player in Ford’s global manufacturing ecosystem.
