Honda’s First Electric SUV Begins India Trials, Faces Real Roads Before Showrooms

Tapukara, Rajasthan: In a move that’s less “vroom” and more “whoosh,” Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL) has officially flagged off the pan-India test run of its first upcoming electric SUV—marking the brand’s serious entry into India’s fast-evolving EV lane.

The test mule, based on the globally showcased Honda 0 Series (0 α) concept unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, has now swapped the exhibition spotlight for real-world Indian roads—where speed breakers, surprise potholes, and chai stops are all part of the testing protocol (officially or unofficially).

This nationwide Public Road Verification program will see the electric SUV tackle everything India throws at it—be it smooth expressways, chaotic city traffic, or terrain that makes even SUVs question their life choices. Honda engineers will closely monitor durability, ride comfort, handling, efficiency, and overall reliability—essentially ensuring the car doesn’t lose its cool even when the weather does.

And yes, it’s not just about surviving Indian summers that can fry an egg on the bonnet. The EV will also be tested in extreme heat, monsoon conditions, and across various charging infrastructures—because in India, finding a charger can sometimes feel like a treasure hunt.

Speaking on the occasion, Takashi Nakajima, President & CEO, Honda Cars India, emphasized that India’s diverse driving conditions demand rigorous real-world validation. The testing program, he noted, blends Honda’s global engineering DNA with local insights to create an electric SUV tailored for Indian customers.

The upcoming model is being positioned as a versatile lifestyle SUV—equally comfortable doing office commutes as it is escaping the city for a weekend getaway. Honda plans to launch the EV globally in FY 2026–27, with India and Japan as key markets. Interestingly, the SUV will be manufactured in India, reinforcing the country’s growing importance in Honda’s global EV strategy.

So, while the prototype silently glides across Indian roads over the coming months, one thing is clear—Honda’s electric future is no longer charging… it’s already in motion.
