Festivities on Hold, GST on the Horizon: FADA’s August Sales See Bookings, but Buyers Hit the Pause Button

New Delhi: The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has released its vehicle retail data for August 2025, and the numbers tell a story that’s part festive cheer, part monsoon gloom, and part “wait till GST 2.0 kicks in.”

Despite high enquiries and robust bookings across showrooms, customers across Bharat chose to keep their cheque books dry — preferring to align purchases with the much-awaited GST 2.0 reforms rolling out on 22nd September. Think of it as buyers RSVPing to the party, but deciding to show up fashionably late.

Retail Performance: A Mixed Bag of Wheels and Deals

  • Overall Retail: +2.84% YoY | +0.02% MoM
  • Two-Wheelers: +2.18% YoY | +1.34% MoM (Scooters dodged potholes better than buyers dodged rain puddles)
  • Three-Wheelers: –2.26% YoY | -7.47% MoM (Still waiting for a lift)
  • Passenger Vehicles (PV): +0.93% YoY | -1.63% MoM (Inventories hovering at ~56 days)
  • Commercial Vehicles (CV): +8.55% YoY | –1.11% MoM (e-commerce trucks did the heavy lifting)
  • Tractors (Trac): +30.14% YoY | –3.95% MoM (Farmers proving again they’re India’s true horsepower kings)
  • Construction Equipment (CE): –26.45% YoY | –5.56% MoM (Sites flooded, sales too)

Policy Spotlight: GST 2.0 — The Real Showstopper

“GST 2.0 marks a historic, people-first reset — courage, consensus, and clarity in taxation,” said FADA President, C. S. Vigneshwar, adding a touch of political poetry to dealership data.

The reform, simplifying slabs to 5%, 18%, and 40%, is expected to lower household costs, strengthen demand, and make industries more competitive. In other words, the nation’s biggest festival this year isn’t Diwali — it’s 22nd September.

Segment Watch: What’s Driving, What’s Parking

  • 2W: Festive enquiries surged during Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi, but rains and GST deferments kept dealers handing out more tea than invoices.
  • PV: Bookings were healthy, but heavy rains, inventory pile-ups, and GST wait-and-watch made showrooms look more like waiting lounges.
  • CV: Strong YoY growth thanks to e-commerce and fleet replacements, but GST whispers slowed the last lap.
  • Trac: Monsoon rains and rural liquidity turned tractor dealerships into mini-stock exchanges, with 30% YoY growth.
  • CE: A casualty of weather and wallet, this segment went deep into the red.

The Road Ahead: September, the Big Fat Indian Auto Wedding

With GDP forecasted at 6.3–6.8%, CPI inflation at a multi-year low of 1.55%, and monsoon showers +8% above normal, macros look festive.

But FADA warns September will be a “two-phase month”:

  • Early September: muted by Shraddh and GST wait-and-watch.
  • Late September: expect firecrackers, Navratri dhols, and mass deliveries of freshly GST-discounted cars.

OEMs are already sweetening the deal with schemes aligned to future GST cuts — letting customers book early, and take delivery on the exact auspicious minute their astrologer approves.

Sentiment Check: Optimism with a Side of Patience

  • Liquidity: Neutral (41.3%), Good (33%), Bad (26%)
  • Dealer Sentiment: Neutral (42.4%), Good (38.4%), Bad (19.2%)
  • Expectations September 2025: Growth (62.8%), Flat (22.8%), De-growth (9.4%)
  • Next 3 Months: Growth (77.9%) — yes, dealers are betting on the festive season like cricket fans on Virat Kohli’s cover drive.

Bottom line: August 2025 was the trailer. September promises the blockbuster. If the rains don’t flood the party and GST 2.0 delivers the popcorn, India’s auto industry may just cruise into its biggest festive quarter yet.
