Steel the Show: Hyundai’s All-New Nexo Flexes Muscles, Muscles Hydrogen, and a Whole Lot of Smart

With a 700-km range, a steel-inspired body, and more tech than a sci-fi film, Hyundai’s second-gen Nexo might just be the SUV that finally makes hydrogen hot.

SEOUL — Hyundai Motor pulled the wraps off the all-new Nexo at the Seoul Mobility Show, and let’s just say: if James Bond went green, this would be his company car. Boasting a design language called Art of Steel, a new fuel cell system, and enough driver-assist features to make your grandma a rally driver, the Nexo isn’t just Hyundai’s hydrogen flagship — it’s a mobile TED Talk on wheels.

The second-generation Nexo is not only longer, wider, and taller (insert growth spurt joke here), but it now comes with a towing capability — a first for fuel cell vehicles. So, if you’ve been waiting for a zero-emission SUV that can pull your camper and your heartstrings, congratulations, your oddly specific wish has been granted.

Hydrogen-Powered, Design-Fueled

Inspired by Hyundai’s Initium concept, the Nexo’s new look is less “eco-nerd” and more “eco-warrior.” Its exterior features bold lines, HTWO lamps (HTWO, Hyundai’s hydrogen brand, not a typo), and doors with grooves that scream “I’m sustainable and stylish.” It’s a rugged yet refined blend — imagine if a steel sculpture went to finishing school.

It comes in six colors, including Goyo Copper Pearl — named after the Korean word for tranquility. So yes, your SUV is now fluent in poetry.

Interior: A Living Room You Can Drive

Step inside and it’s like entering a Scandinavian tech lounge that decided to moonlight as a family SUV. There are Relaxation Seats up front, ventilated reclining seats in the back, and enough ambient lighting to host a low-key rave. Storage? Everywhere. Cupholders, center console, and even “what-is-that” level compartments for snacks or secrets.

The curved display stretches across the dashboard like it’s auditioning for a sci-fi movie, and the infotainment system now comes with generative AI voice control. You can practically have a debate about hydrogen policy with your car while stuck in traffic.

Powertrain: More Zoom, Less Boom

Under the hood — or wherever the magic happens in a fuel cell vehicle — lies a 190 kW motor system, up from 135 kW. The battery got a glow-up too, doubling its output to 80 kW. That means the Nexo can now go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds. Not exactly rocket-fast, but for something this clean, it’s impressively mean.

The hydrogen tanks now store 6.69 kg of fuel, and despite being eco-conscious, the Nexo didn’t skimp on fun. It’s got e-Handling, Smart Regenerative Braking, and even a FCEV Route Planner, which sounds like your car is just as neurotic about pit stops as you are.

Tech to Impress Elon (or at least confuse him)

Let’s break it down:

  • 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen system – For when you want Beethoven while towing a kayak.
  • Digital Key 2 – Unlock your car with your phone, or your watch, or just your aura (okay, maybe not that last one).
  • Built-in Cam 2 Plus – It watches the watchers, records your road trip tantrums, and stays awake for four days.
  • Generative AI voice assistant – Because yelling “play something good” at your dashboard should actually work now.
  • Dual wireless chargers, fingerprint authentication, HUD, and mood lighting – Nexo is low-key auditioning to be your next therapist.

Safety First, Second, and Third

With up to nine airbags, high-strength steel, and an alphabet soup of driver assistance systems (FCA, LKA, BCA, NSCC, BVM, HDA… we stopped counting), the Nexo is probably safer than your living room. It also has rear occupant alert, because apparently, people still forget their kids in the car.

The SUV That Does Everything but Cook Dinner

The all-new Nexo is Hyundai’s declaration that hydrogen mobility isn’t just a science project anymore — it’s a lifestyle. With bold design, serious range, and more tech than your local Best Buy, it’s a compelling case for the fuel cell future.

Will it dethrone battery EVs overnight? Probably not. But it might just steal some stares, hearts, and maybe even a few Tesla owners looking for something… cooler. Literally — the hydrogen fuel cell runs cool.

So buckle up. The future smells like… absolutely nothing. Because hydrogen doesn’t stink.
