New Delhi – In a landmark moment for India’s automotive logistics industry, Kia India has flagged off the country’s first-ever double-decker freight train exclusively for SUVs. Departing from Penukonda railway station in February, this pioneering initiative is poised to transform vehicle transportation by significantly increasing efficiency and sustainability in the sector.
The double-decker freight train, specifically designed for SUV transportation, enhances the carrying capacity to an impressive 264 vehicles per trip—more than double the standard capacity of approximately 100 cars. By leveraging rail logistics, Kia India aims to optimize supply chain operations, reduce transit time, and meet the surging demand for its SUVs across the country.

Speaking on the milestone, Hardeep Singh Brar, Senior Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing at Kia India, said, “The launch of India’s first double-decker freight train for SUVs marks a pivotal step in modernizing vehicle transportation. This initiative will significantly cut down waiting periods, ensuring faster deliveries for our customers. By integrating this sustainable and efficient logistics solution, Kia India is reinforcing its commitment to eco-friendly mobility and enhancing operational excellence.”
Kia has successfully transported over 60,000 SUVs via rail to the northern, eastern, and western regions of India. With the new double-decker system, the company aims to further improve supply chain management while making strides towards reducing its carbon footprint. The shift from road-based logistics to rail freight is expected to lower emissions, reduce road congestion, and contribute to a more sustainable automotive ecosystem.
This move aligns with the government’s vision of enhancing the country’s logistics infrastructure and promoting sustainable solutions in manufacturing. By setting a precedent with India’s first double-decker SUV freight train, Kia India is not only boosting its own efficiency but also inspiring broader advancements in the nation’s transportation sector. This milestone signifies a step towards an integrated, efficient, and greener future for automobile logistics in India.
