New Delhi – India’s toll tax collection on national highways has reached an impressive ₹1.44 lakh crore since December 2000, as disclosed by Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today. The collection is attributed to user fees at fee plazas established under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The toll collection system operates under the framework of the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, and its subsequent amendments. Each fee plaza adheres to these guidelines and the respective concession agreements, ensuring a uniform approach to toll collection across the nation’s highways.
The government enforces these charges through official notifications published in the Gazette, allowing for the systematic imposition of user fees for various sections of the highways. The collected revenue plays a vital role in the maintenance, development, and expansion of India’s national highway infrastructure.
This milestone reflects the growing footprint of India’s highway network and highlights the significance of PPP models in driving infrastructure development.
