Volkswagen integrates ChatGPT for a smarter, more conversational driving experience, starting with the 2025 Jetta and ID.4.
Reston, VA — Volkswagen of America, Inc. is taking its voice-assistant technology to the next level by incorporating ChatGPT into its vehicle lineup. Starting on September 6, 2024, the AI-driven feature will debut in the 2025 Jetta and Jetta GLI models, along with MY24 ID.4 vehicles equipped with an 82-kWh battery. This cutting-edge addition, powered by Cerence Chat Pro, will elevate Volkswagen’s IDA voice assistant, transforming how drivers and passengers interact with their cars.
Through the Plus Speech with AI subscription, Volkswagen customers will gain access to ChatGPT, enabling natural, human-like conversations and hands-free assistance. This feature will be automatically activated for current MY24 ID.4 owners with an active subscription, while MY25 ID.4 models will follow suit later in the year.
Volkswagen’s voice assistant, already adept at managing navigation, infotainment, and climate settings, will now be able to handle a wider range of inquiries—from answering general knowledge questions to offering personalized suggestions like nearby dining options or entertainment during road trips. Drivers can activate the assistant with the familiar “Hello IDA” or “Hello Volkswagen” prompts, depending on the model, or via a steering wheel button.
What sets this latest upgrade apart is its ability to interpret and respond to more conversational commands. Instead of simply saying, “Set the temperature to 70 degrees,” drivers can now say things like, “I’m feeling cold,” and the AI will automatically adjust the heating system based on the context.
Cerence Chat Pro’s automotive-grade integration ensures that when the vehicle’s onboard system cannot fulfill a request, it connects seamlessly to the cloud to tap into ChatGPT’s AI, providing reliable responses to a wide range of questions. Whether you’re searching for a great restaurant nearby or simply asking for a fun story to pass the time, Volkswagen’s enhanced voice assistant transforms the driving experience into a more connected, intuitive journey.
Security and privacy remain a top priority, with Volkswagen ensuring that no vehicle data is accessed by ChatGPT. All session data is deleted immediately after use, ensuring privacy is maintained throughout the experience.
The AI-powered assistant will be available across most 2025 models, with ID.4 and ID. Buzz offering three years of complimentary Plus Speech with AI. Other models, including the GTI, Golf R, and Tiguan, will provide one year of free access, while vehicles like the Jetta and Taos will offer the subscription as an option through the myVW mobile app. Starting in 2026, the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport will also include ChatGPT integration.
Volkswagen’s integration of ChatGPT marks a significant milestone in automotive innovation, bringing an unprecedented level of convenience, safety, and personalization to drivers nationwide.
