PLANO, Texas (July 12, 2024) – Toyota has announced the return of a fan favorite with a modern twist: the 2025 GR86 Hakone Special Edition. Paying homage to the iconic Hakone Turnpike in Japan, this limited-edition sports car is set to make a bold statement with its distinctive Ridge Green exterior.
Built on the foundation of the GR86 Premium grade, the Hakone Special Edition offers a choice between a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, powered by a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder boxer engine that delivers 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. This special edition stands out with 18-inch satin bronze-finished wheels, a color-keyed duck-tail spoiler, black accents, and a unique Hakone badge.
Inside, the GR86 Hakone features Ultrasuede sport seats with tan leather trim and stitching. A custom shift knob with bronze accents and a GR special edition plaque add to its exclusive appeal.
Toyota has equipped the Hakone edition with SACHS Dampers and Brembo Brakes as standard, ensuring a superior driving experience. Only 860 units will be produced for the U.S. market, with availability starting in Fall 2024. Pricing details will be announced later this year.
Racing-Inspired Performance and Handling
Drawing from its motorsport heritage, the 2025 GR86 benefits from several performance enhancements. Re-tuned shock absorbers improve handling response, while revised throttle mapping facilitates easier “blipping” for smooth downshifts. Engine torque control has been optimized for better throttle response and control. The electric power steering has also been refined for a more connected driving feel.
Standard on the Hakone edition, the SACHS Dampers and Brembo Brakes are also available as part of an optional Performance Package for other GR86 grades. These components work together to enhance the GR86’s chassis, known for its responsive and balanced handling. The chassis combines high-strength steel, hot-stamped steel, and aluminum, strategically placed for maximum control and stability.
Lightweight Design for Maximum Fun
Staying true to its lightweight sports car roots, the GR86 weighs just 2,811 pounds (manual) and 2,851 pounds (automatic). An aluminum hood, front fenders, and roof panel help keep the weight down, complemented by lightweight seats and structural adhesives.
The naturally aspirated 2.4-liter FA-24 engine, delivering 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, ensures a powerful driving experience. The GR86 achieves 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds (manual) and 6.6 seconds (automatic), with both versions featuring a Torsen limited-slip rear differential for improved traction.
The GR86 offers a driver-focused cockpit with a digital instrument panel, push-button start, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated controls. An 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system with a six-speaker audio system comes standard, with an upgrade to an eight-speaker system on the Hakone edition and Premium grade.
Advanced Safety and Connected Services
All GR86 models come with an Active Safety Suite, including Pre-Collision Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Warning. The GR86 also features Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, and Hill Start Assist Control.
Toyota’s Connected Services offer a suite of trials, including a one-year subscription to Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect. These services provide emergency assistance, maintenance updates, and remote interaction with the vehicle via the Toyota app.
Exclusive NASA Membership and Comprehensive Warranty
Purchasing a 2025 GR86 includes a complimentary one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA), featuring a free High-Performance Driving Event and discounted admission to NASA events.
Toyota’s comprehensive warranty covers the vehicle for 36 months/36,000 miles, with additional 60-month warranties for the powertrain and corrosion. ToyotaCare provides no-cost maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years, unlimited mileage.
