Munich – In a groundbreaking move towards autonomous driving, BMW has become the first car manufacturer to receive approval for integrating both Level 2 and Level 3 driving assistance systems within a single vehicle. This innovation is showcased in the new BMW 7 Series, setting a new benchmark in the automotive industry.
Unprecedented Dual System Integration
The new BMW 7 Series is the first car to feature the BMW Highway Assistant (Level 2) alongside the BMW Personal Pilot L3 (Level 3). This combination provides drivers with a seamless and enhanced driving experience, merging advanced comfort and autonomy on the road.
BMW Highway Assistant: Enhanced Long-Distance Comfort
The BMW Highway Assistant, a Level 2 feature, is designed to significantly improve comfort during long-distance journeys. Capable of operating at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph), this system allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. The system ensures that drivers remain attentive and ready to take control when necessary.
A key aspect of this system is the Active Lane Change Assistant, which enables the vehicle to perform overtaking maneuvers independently. Drivers can initiate lane changes by simply glancing at the exterior mirror, making long journeys smoother and more relaxed.
BMW Personal Pilot L3: Autonomy in Traffic Jams
The Level 3 BMW Personal Pilot L3 feature takes autonomy a step further by allowing drivers to fully delegate driving tasks under specific conditions. At speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), drivers can take their hands off the wheel and engage in other in-car activities such as making phone calls, reading, or streaming videos. This system is particularly beneficial in traffic jams on motorways, offering a more productive and less stressful driving experience. Drivers must, however, be ready to reassume control when prompted by the vehicle, such as in the presence of roadworks.
A Milestone in Automated Driving

Availability and Pricing
The BMW Highway Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional are part of the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3 package, exclusively available in Germany at a price of €6,000/INR 5.37 lakh (including VAT). Owners of cars equipped with the BMW Personal Pilot L3 will receive the BMW Highway Assistant free of charge starting from August 2024.
