Mini Cooper Convertible: A Timeless British Icon with Modern Flair

The Mini Cooper Convertible, launched in 2001, has evolved through the years and reached its third generation by 2018. Here’s a detailed look at what this iconic British convertible offers:

Design and Assembly: Designed by Stefan Göppel, the Mini Cooper Convertible, also known as Mini Hatch, Mini One, or BMW Mini in some countries, is assembled in Cowley, UK. It sports a distinctively round design aimed at enhancing aerodynamic efficiency and pedestrian safety, though some critics find it overly styled.

Performance: The Cooper S Convertible, available in India until it was discontinued, housed a 1998 cc, inline 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine. With features like a Double VANOS, it delivers 192 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque. The acceleration is brisk, managing 0-100 kmph in 7.1 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 228 kmph. It offers two drive modes, Sport and Green, catering to different driving dynamics.

Transmission and Efficiency: It comes with a 6-speed automatic Steptronic transmission, though manual options were not available in India. The average fuel consumption stands at 14 km/l with a 44-liter fuel tank.

Interior and Features: The cabin boasts either leatherette or fabric upholstery and is equipped with a Harman Kardon audio system, ensuring a rich sound experience. Its 6.5-inch infotainment system supports Bluetooth, phone connectivity, FM, and radio. It also features a multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, and an instrument cluster with volume, phone, and voice controls.

Exterior and Customization: The convertible is available in multiple colors including the striking Starlight Blue. It measures 3.8 meters in length, 1.7 meters in width, and 1.4 meters in height. LED headlamps and tail lamps, rain-sensing wipers, and a fully electric soft-top mechanism provide a blend of aesthetics and functionality. The car rides on 17-inch alloy wheels fitted with Hankook Ventus S1 EVO2 tyres.

Comfort and Practicality: Despite its compact dimensions, the convertible manages a 160-liter boot space, which is modest but usable. Other practical features include electronic power steering and manual air conditioning.

Pricing and Availability: The Cooper S Convertible was priced at ₹33.24 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. Currently, only the hatchback version is available, priced at ₹42.70 lakh.

Legacy and Future Models: The Mini Convertible has seen several special editions and concepts like the powerful JCW edition and the Mini Superleggera Vision roadster Concept. As of now, the fourth generation of Mini Cooper has been launched internationally, and it remains to be seen when it will make its debut in India.

The Mini Cooper Convertible remains a beloved choice for those seeking a stylish, fun-to-drive car with a rich heritage and premium features, although its discontinuation has limited options for enthusiasts in some markets.
