In a groundbreaking move that’s electrifying the automotive world, Ford has flipped the switch on a new era of electric vehicle (EV) charging convenience for its customers. Owners of the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E in the U.S. and Canada can now juice up their rides at Tesla Superchargers, marking a first for non-Tesla EV drivers.
This monumental partnership more than doubles the fast charging horizons for Ford’s EV enthusiasts, linking them to over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers. Given that a Cox Automotive Consumer Sentiment Study flagged charging station scarcity as a major speed bump on the road to EV adoption, this development could very well put the pedal to the metal for potential EV buyers.
To celebrate this electrifying union, Ford is offering the essential Fast Charging Adapter gratis to its retail EV customers who are part of the BlueOval Charge Network, if they apply by June 30, 2024. Post this date, newcomers to the Ford EV family can acquire the adapter for $230, ensuring their access to the Tesla Supercharging grid.
Commercial customers won’t be left in the dust; Ford Pro will reach out this spring with details on how to secure their adapter, ensuring businesses can keep their EV fleets running as smoothly as a well-oiled engine.
The integration into the Tesla Supercharger network not only expands the charging options but simplifies the process. Through the FordPass App, or the soon-to-be-renamed Charge Assist App, customers can manage their charging sessions with a single payment account, doing away with the need for physical credit cards. What’s more, the forthcoming support for Plug & Charge means Ford EVs will start charging the moment they’re plugged into a Tesla Supercharger, making the experience as seamless as possible.
Looking ahead, Ford’s next-gen electric vehicles will come with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector, making the need for an adapter to access Tesla’s Superchargers a thing of the past.
Ford’s CEO, Jim Farley, expressed his gratitude towards Tesla and Elon Musk for their collaboration, emphasizing the significance of this partnership in enhancing the EV charging infrastructure and supporting Ford’s growth in the electric vehicle sector.
Ford EV drivers can begin the adapter reservation process through the Ford website, ensuring they’re ready to tap into Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network. With the BlueOval Charge Network now boasting over 126,000 chargers, including more than 28,000 fast chargers, Ford EV owners are more equipped than ever for the road ahead.
This partnership not only marks a significant milestone in the EV journey but also signals a future where electric mobility is more accessible, convenient, and integrated, propelling Ford customers into a new realm of charging possibilities.
