In an unprecedented move blending innovation with a sprinkle of digital etiquette, the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) and Amrita University have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, embarking on a quest to imbue Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems with trustworthiness and responsibility. This groundbreaking partnership aims to revolutionize the way AI technologies are assessed for bias, ensuring that the future of AI is not only bright but also fair and reliable.
Dubbed the “Good Behavior Protocol,” this initiative focuses on the development of sophisticated tools designed to systematically evaluate risks of bias in AI, thereby laying the foundation for a robust framework dedicated to certifying the fairness and reliability of AI technologies. The move is set to transform the AI landscape by integrating rigorous fairness assessments and fostering public trust in these rapidly evolving technologies, in line with the Government of India’s vision for a tech-savvy future.
Highlighting the potential of this collaboration to spearhead solutions for fairness assessment and rating of AI systems, Senior Deputy Director General at TEC, Smt Tripti Saxena, couldn’t hide her enthusiasm. “It’s like teaching robots to mind their Ps and Qs,” she remarked, underscoring the importance of bridging the gap between academia and government bodies to promote rigorous research and secure India’s position as a frontrunner in AI.
The MoU, which reads like a roadmap to ethical AI, was officially signed by Sh. Avinash Agarwal, DDG (C&B) from TEC, and Prof Krishnashree Achuthan, Dean Graduate Studies from Amrita University. This formalizes their joint commitment to navigating the complexities of Responsible AI and ensuring that AI/ML systems are not just smart, but also fair and unbiased.
TEC, recognized as the beacon of standards in telecommunications and related ICT sectors, and Amrita University, lauded for its stellar research credentials and “A++” NAAC rating, are set to lead the charge towards a future where AI systems are not only intelligent but also endowed with a strong ethical compass.
