Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Toyota Kirloskar Motor has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Watershed Organization Trust to launch a large-scale water conservation and watershed management programme across nine villages in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.
Called Toyota Vasundhara, the initiative will cover 6,167 hectares in the Paithan and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar taluks. It is expected to benefit 11,268 people from 2,398 households, while expanding irrigation coverage to 20% of the project area.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Vinay Gowda G.C., Collector and District Magistrate of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, along with senior representatives from Toyota Kirloskar Motor and the Watershed Organization Trust, or WOTR.
The programme will focus on soil and water conservation, development of water resources, community participation and livelihood support. It is intended to improve access to water for agriculture and domestic use, restore soil health and help farmers adopt more diverse cropping patterns.
The initiative comes as parts of the Marathwada region continue to face low and irregular rainfall. According to information shared by the company, the Paithan and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar blocks receive an average annual rainfall of around 610 mm, compared with a stated standard requirement of 748 mm.
Villages surrounding the Bidkin industrial area are particularly vulnerable to drought and agricultural degradation. About 78% of farmers in the region reportedly face unreliable access to water, while 93% experience significant seasonal fluctuations in income.
Limited irrigation has forced many farmers to depend on a single crop, leaving household earnings exposed to both poor rainfall and market uncertainty — an uncomfortable combination in which neither the weather nor the balance sheet offers much reassurance.
Under the project, local communities will participate in planning, implementation and the long-term management of water conservation structures. The approach is designed to ensure that the infrastructure continues to function after the initial construction and funding phases are completed.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor said the programme is expected to increase irrigation potential, improve agricultural productivity and enable multiple cropping cycles. Greater crop diversity could also provide farmers with additional sources of income and reduce their dependence on a single harvest.
The partnership builds on water conservation programmes previously implemented by Toyota Kirloskar Motor and WOTR in North Karnataka. WOTR has worked on watershed development and climate-resilient rural livelihood projects in several parts of India.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has undertaken community programmes in education, environmental conservation, road safety, skill development, healthcare, hygiene and disaster management since 2001.
For drought-prone communities in Marathwada, however, the success of Toyota Vasundhara will ultimately be measured less by the number of structures constructed than by whether wells retain water longer, farms support more than one crop and rural incomes become less dependent on the next monsoon.
