New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki India Limited has crossed a significant export milestone, with cumulative shipments of the Made-in-India Jimny 5-door, Fronx and e Vitara to Japan surpassing 1 lakh units, highlighting India’s growing role in Suzuki Motor Corporation’s global manufacturing network.
The achievement is notable because Japan, home to some of the world’s largest and most established automobile manufacturers, has emerged as Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market.
Exports of the Fronx to Japan began in August 2024, followed by the Jimny 5-door in December 2024. Maruti Suzuki’s first battery electric vehicle, the e Vitara, joined the export portfolio in September 2025.
The Jimny 5-door and e Vitara are manufactured exclusively in India, giving the company’s Indian operations an increasingly important role in supplying vehicles for international markets.
According to Maruti Suzuki, Japan was its second-largest export market by volume during FY 2025-26 and retained that position between April and August of FY 2026-27.
The three India-made models have also contributed to Suzuki Motor Corporation becoming Japan’s No. 1 vehicle importer in FY 2025-26, the company said. Vehicles manufactured by Maruti Suzuki accounted for nearly 100% of Suzuki’s vehicle imports into Japan during the financial year.
For an Indian manufacturing operation originally established with Japanese technology and investment, shipping cars back to Japan represents something of a full-circle moment — though one measured in container ships rather than sentiment.
Speaking on the milestone, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said, “The milestone of over 1 lakh exports of Jimny 5-door, Fronx, and e Vitara to Japan is a powerful endorsement of India’s manufacturing excellence. This achievement is particularly significant as Japan is one of the world’s most demanding and advanced automobile markets. The export milestone also symbolizes the remarkable evolution of the India-Japan partnership. What began as Suzuki’s vision to manufacture automobiles in India has come full circle, with Made-in-India vehicles finding strong acceptance among Japanese customers. This success has helped Japan emerge as the second biggest market for Maruti Suzuki exports.”
The milestone reflects the broader shift in India’s automotive industry from primarily serving domestic demand to becoming a production base for globally sold vehicles, including models destined for mature and highly competitive markets such as Japan.
For Maruti Suzuki, the 1 lakh-unit mark is therefore more than an export tally. It underlines how India is becoming increasingly integrated into Suzuki’s global production and supply strategy, with vehicles built in Indian factories now finding customers in the company’s home market.
