Green SM Expands Electric Taxi Network to Palembang, Its Second City in Sumatra

PALEMBANG, Indonesia: Green SM has officially launched its all-electric taxi service in Palembang, making the South Sumatran city its second market on the island after Bandar Lampung as the mobility company continues expanding its electric transport network across Indonesia.

The launch is accompanied by the company’s “Green Your Move, Refresh Your City” campaign, which supports initiatives by Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency, or KLH/BPLH, under the theme “Ecosystem & Air Protection” (Perlindungan Ekosistem & Udara).

The campaign is intended to encourage residents to choose more environmentally friendly forms of transport and highlight the potential contribution of electric mobility to cleaner urban air.

Green SM operates a 100% electric vehicle fleet and says its service model centres on professional drivers, transparent pricing and consistent service quality. The Palembang rollout follows earlier launches in Jakarta, Makassar, Surabaya, Bali and Bandar Lampung.

The expansion comes as Palembang, one of Sumatra’s major commercial and service centres, continues to see growing transportation demand. The city has a population of more than 1.8 million and has also been pursuing sustainable development and smart-city initiatives, creating a potentially significant market for electric urban transport.

Pham Nhat Minh Hoang, Global CEO of Green SM, said: “I am delighted that Green SM has another opportunity to bring the positive values of green mobility to even more people across Indonesia. We believe that through our consistent service quality, professional drivers, and the outstanding benefits that green mobility offers, Green SM will become a trusted companion for the people of Palembang in their daily journeys, while contributing to ecosystem protection and cleaner air in Indonesia.”

Launch promotions for Palembang riders

Green SM has introduced a phased promotional programme for customers in Palembang.

Riders can receive a 100% discount of up to Rp50,000 from September 12 to September 16, 2026. That will be followed by a 50% discount of up to Rp50,000 from September 17 to September 25, and a 35% discount of up to Rp50,000 from September 26 to October 2.

The incentives are aimed at encouraging residents to try the electric taxi service during its initial weeks of operation — a familiar tactic in the mobility business, where convincing passengers to take the first ride is often half the journey.

Beyond passenger services, Green SM said its expansion strategy includes job creation, local workforce development and cooperation with public and private-sector stakeholders as it works to build a broader electric mobility ecosystem.

The company said it aims to improve access to modern transportation while generating economic and environmental benefits for the communities in which it operates.

According to Green SM, its global operations have so far completed approximately 850 million trips covering nearly 6 billion kilometres. The company estimates that those journeys have helped reduce more than 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, which it says is equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of approximately 36 million trees.

The Palembang launch adds another major Indonesian city to Green SM’s expanding network and reflects the broader shift towards electric urban transport in Southeast Asia. How quickly residents adopt such services will ultimately depend not only on emissions and technology, but also on the everyday essentials of city travel: availability, pricing and reliability.
