Mumbai: Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce an all-new sub-4 metre compact SUV in India in 2027, marking a significant expansion of its local product strategy as the German carmaker seeks a larger share of one of the country’s highest-volume passenger vehicle segments.
The upcoming SUV will be developed on Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0-IN platform and manufactured locally. Volkswagen said the model is expected to become its most accessible SUV offering in India, placing it in a segment where pricing, practicality and feature content often matter almost as much as the badge on the bonnet.
The vehicle is being developed with a high level of localisation and specifically with Indian market requirements in mind. Volkswagen said its engineering priorities will include safety, build quality, efficient powertrains and technology suited to local conditions.
The announcement also signals Volkswagen’s intention to broaden its customer base in India by taking its German-engineering positioning into the sub-4 metre SUV category.
Commenting on the announcement, Thomas Schäfer, CEO, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand, and Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, said, “India is a market of enormous scale and ambition, and this new compact SUV marks an important step in Volkswagen’s journey here. We are bringing our global expertise in building cars that people love to drive and own into a segment of great importance to Indian customers. This model is being developed specifically for India, and it reinforces our long-term commitment to the Indian market as part of our global growth strategy.”
Developed and Manufactured in India
Volkswagen said the compact SUV will be developed in India and produced locally, building on the manufacturing and supplier ecosystem already established around the MQB-A0-IN architecture.
The platform was developed specifically for the Indian market and has been co-developed by engineering teams in India and Europe. It is designed to support high localisation while allowing manufacturers to manage production timelines and ownership costs.
Piyush Arora, Managing Director & CEO, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, said, “This announcement reflects the depth of our commitment to India, not just as a market but as a manufacturing and innovation base for the Volkswagen Group globally. The new compact SUV will be developed in India, for India, and locally produced, building on the strength of our existing MQB-A0-IN platform ecosystem. It will deepen our supplier network, create opportunities across our manufacturing and business ecosystem, and further our vision of positioning India as a competitive development and production hub. This is Volkswagen’s continued investment in India’s growth story.”
Volkswagen said the architecture can accommodate efficient powertrains, advanced safety systems and technologies designed around Indian emission and safety regulations.
Volkswagen Looks for Greater Scale
The new model will also play an important role in Volkswagen India’s efforts to increase sales volumes and reach customers beyond its existing product portfolio.
Nitin Kohli, Brand Director, Volkswagen India, added, “With this new compact SUV, we are democratising German-engineering for the affluent Indian compact SUV buyer. The all-new SUV will deliver scale and volume, bringing our core tenets of fun-to-drive performance, safety and build quality into the largest, highest-volume segment in India. As we move closer to the 2027 market introduction, we will expand our presence in India, reaching out to a new customer base in the country.”
Volkswagen has not yet disclosed the production model’s name, engine specifications, features, dimensions beyond its sub-4 metre positioning, pricing or an exact launch date.
Those details will become increasingly important as the 2027 market introduction approaches. The compact SUV category is fiercely contested, and a familiar German badge alone is unlikely to earn anyone an easy afternoon. Volkswagen’s challenge will be to combine its traditional focus on driving dynamics, safety and build quality with the pricing and ownership expectations of Indian buyers.
For Volkswagen, however, the importance of the project extends beyond a single new model. By developing and manufacturing the SUV locally on the MQB-A0-IN platform, the company is placing India more firmly within its development and production strategy while preparing to compete for substantially higher volumes in the country’s mainstream automotive market.
