Mercedes-Benz Expands India PHEV Line-up With AMG E 53 Hybrid, Price Starts at ₹1.45 Crore

New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz India has launched the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+, introducing the first electrified AMG sedan in its Indian E-Class portfolio. Priced from ₹1.45 crore ex-showroom, the plug-in hybrid performance sedan combines a six-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to produce up to 612 hp while offering a claimed electric-only range of more than 100 kilometres.

The luxury carmaker also announced a multi-year title partnership with the Indian Padel Tour for its 2026–27 season, extending its customer-engagement strategy beyond automobiles and into one of India’s emerging participation sports.

The AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ will be offered in Performance and Racing Editions, priced at ₹1.45 crore and ₹1.48 crore respectively, ex-showroom across India. Bookings have opened at Mercedes-Benz dealerships nationwide, with deliveries expected to begin immediately.

Six-Cylinder Performance Meets Plug-In Hybrid Efficiency

At the heart of the AMG E 53 Hybrid is a 3.0-litre, turbocharged in-line six-cylinder petrol engine producing 330 kW, or 449 hp. It is paired with a 120 kW electric motor integrated into the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission.

Together, the engine and motor deliver a combined output of 430 kW, equivalent to 585 hp, and 750 Nm of torque. With the RACE START function engaged, output rises to 450 kW, or 612 hp.

Mercedes-Benz claims the sedan can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Its top speed is electronically restricted to 250 km/h, although this can be increased to 280 km/h with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.

In other words, it can complete the weekday office commute without burning petrol and spend the weekend behaving as though fuel economy was merely a polite suggestion.

The performance sedan is equipped with AMG Performance 4Matic+, a fully variable all-wheel-drive system that distributes power between the front and rear axles according to available traction and driving conditions.

“The E-Class has been the longest running nameplates in the Indian automotive industry and the AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ underlines performance, practical usability and electric efficiency, making the E Class portfolio truly unmatched. This performance sedan combines genuine AMG performance with plug in hybrid’s efficiency, balancing an AMG customers need of racetrack performance with practicality of daily usage, perfectly. The AMG E53 Hybrid furthers our ‘powertrain agnostic’ strategy for India, where customers decide the powertrain of their choice, suiting their requirement,” said Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India.

More Than 100 Kilometres of Electric Driving

The AMG E 53 Hybrid uses a 400-volt battery with a gross capacity of 28.6 kWh, of which 21.2 kWh is available for regular driving.

Mercedes-Benz says the sedan can cover more than 100 kilometres using electric power under the WLTP testing cycle. It can also travel at speeds of up to 140 km/h without engaging the petrol engine.

An 11 kW onboard AC charger is provided as standard. The battery can be replenished through external charging as well as regenerative braking, which recovers energy when the vehicle slows down.

A portion of the battery’s capacity is reserved to provide brief periods of electric assistance during high-performance driving. The battery is positioned beneath the boot floor to preserve passenger space and help maintain a balanced centre of gravity.

Drivers can select from Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Slippery and Individual driving programmes. Two hybrid-specific settings — Electric and Battery Hold — allow the driver to control how and when the stored electrical energy is used.

AMG-Tuned Suspension and Rear-Wheel Steering

The AMG E 53 Hybrid receives AMG Ride Control suspension developed specifically for the model.

Active rear-axle steering is also standard. At speeds below 90 km/h, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels by up to 2.5 degrees, improving manoeuvrability and reducing the car’s turning circle.

Above 90 km/h, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels, again by up to 2.5 degrees, to improve stability during high-speed lane changes and cornering.

An electromechanical brake booster combines hydraulic braking with electrical recuperation. Mercedes-Benz says the system automatically maximises energy recovery without creating a noticeable transition for the driver.

The AMG Dynamic Plus package adds an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, dynamic engine mounts, a composite high-performance braking system and the Race Start function. It also includes an AMG Performance steering wheel finished in Nappa leather and Microcut microfibre.

Wider Bodywork and AMG-Specific Styling

Visually, the E 53 Hybrid is differentiated from the standard E-Class by an illuminated AMG-specific radiator grille, a redesigned front apron and additional cooling ducts.

Its front fenders are 11 mm wider on each side, giving the sedan a broader stance. “Turbo Hybrid” lettering and an E 53 badge with a red surround identify the electrified powertrain.

At the rear, the car receives an AMG apron with a diffuser, a boot-lid spoiler and four round exhaust outlets. It rides on 20-inch AMG five-twin-spoke alloy wheels finished in matt black with high-sheen detailing.

The AMG Night Package II brings dark-chrome exterior elements, while Digital Light headlamps are also included.

Customers can choose from six exterior paint finishes: Polar White, Verde Silver, Obsidian Black, Nautical Blue, Velvet Brown and Graphite Grey metallic.

AMG Cabin With Hybrid-Specific Displays

Inside, the sedan is equipped with electrically adjustable AMG sports seats upholstered in Artico man-made leather and Microcut microfibre. Red contrast stitching and AMG-specific seat graphics provide the expected dose of performance-car theatre.

The MBUX infotainment system includes AMG Performance and AMG Track Pace menus, along with displays for battery charge, energy use and electric driving range.

A Burmester 4D surround-sound system is standard, featuring 17 speakers, four exciters and a total output of 730 watts. Dolby Atmos playback is also supported.

Other equipment includes pull-out front sun visors, rear-door sunblinds and an electrically operated roller blind for the rear windscreen — useful additions in a country where summer sunlight often arrives with the subtlety of a spotlight.

Mercedes-Benz Backs Indian Padel Tour

Alongside the vehicle launch, Mercedes-Benz India announced that it will become the title partner of the Indian Padel Tour for the 2026–27 season.

The association represents the carmaker’s first major involvement in competitive padel and is aimed at connecting the brand with younger customers and emerging sporting communities.

“At Mercedes-Benz, the brand desirability extends beyond alluring products to curated experiences and building communities that inspire our customers, creating culture shaping modern trends. The association with Indian Padel Tour reflects our commitment to creating such distinctive experiences, championing performance and creating emerging lifestyle trends,” Iyer said.

Organised by PadelPark India, the Indian Padel Tour was launched in 2024. According to the company, it has since conducted 37 tournaments across seven cities, engaged more than 5,000 players and built a community exceeding 50,000 participants and followers.

The 2026–27 season is scheduled to begin in Mumbai in August 2026 and conclude in Bengaluru in June 2027. It will comprise 19 tournaments, including 10 City Opens, five Grand Slam events and four special events.

The press release provided differing figures for the tour’s geographic reach, referring to 11 cities in its highlights and 10 cities in the detailed season announcement.

“The Indian Padel Tour was created with a simple ambition: to build the competitive ecosystem that every great sport needs. While participation introduces people to padel, competition inspires them to improve, dream bigger and stay engaged with the sport for years to come. We are proud to welcome Mercedes-Benz India as the Title Partner of IPT. This partnership is not just about supporting tournaments; it is a shared commitment to building the future of padel in India and establishing the country as one of the world’s most exciting emerging markets for the sport,” said Jigar Doshi, Co-Founder, PadelPark India.

Mercedes-Benz customers will receive access to padel courts, dedicated customer Padel Days and early information and registration opportunities for Indian Padel Tour events. Buyers of the AMG E 53 Hybrid will also receive direct entry to an Indian Padel Tour Grand Slam event.

With the E 53 Hybrid, Mercedes-Benz is attempting to demonstrate that electrification need not come at the cost of performance, while its padel partnership reflects the broader effort by luxury carmakers to build communities around sport, lifestyle and customer experience. Both moves underline how the premium automobile business is increasingly being shaped not only by what sits in the driveway, but also by the ecosystem built around it.
