Toyota Restores 10 Hectares of Herbivore Habitat at Bannerghatta Biological Park

Bengaluru: Toyota Kirloskar Motor has handed over a 10-hectare ecological restoration project in the Herbivore Safari Zone of Bannerghatta Biological Park to the Zoo Authority of Karnataka, following the removal of invasive weeds and plantation of native saplings across the site.

The project, undertaken as part of the automaker’s Corporate Environmental Responsibility commitments, is intended to restore ecological balance, improve the quality of wildlife habitats and increase the availability of natural forage for herbivorous species living within the park.

The restored area was formally handed over in the presence of A V Surya Sen, IFS, Executive Director of Bannerghatta Biological Park; A Ramesh Rao, Vice President, External Affairs at Toyota Kirloskar Motor; senior company executives; and officials of the biological park.

According to the company, the restoration work involved scientific weed removal followed by afforestation using plant species native to the region. Native plantations are generally better adapted to local environmental conditions and can support the gradual recovery of an ecosystem without asking nature to work overtime.

Since the restoration site is located within an active herbivore safari zone, solar fencing has been installed around the plantation area to prevent animals from grazing on young saplings.

The protective fencing is expected to remain in place for approximately two years, giving the saplings sufficient time to mature and become capable of withstanding natural grazing pressure.

The project also includes a borewell connected to a solar-powered pumping system. The irrigation arrangement is designed to provide a reliable water supply during dry periods, improve sapling survival rates and support healthy vegetation growth without relying entirely on conventional power sources.

“Public-private partnerships play a crucial role in strengthening conservation efforts across Karnataka. This initiative by Toyota Kirloskar Motor demonstrates how the industry can actively contribute to restoring ecosystems and enhancing wildlife habitats. The integration of renewable energy solutions further reflects a responsible and sustainable approach to environmental stewardship,” A V Surya Sen IFS, Executive Director, Bannerghatta Biological Park said.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor said the initiative falls under its Harmony with Nature — Green Wave projects and supports the broader goals of the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050.

“At TKM, we believe that biodiversity conservation is a fundamental pillar of sustainable development. This project reflects our commitment to the Harmony with Nature initiative under the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050. By implementing scientific weed management, native afforestation, protective measures for young plantations, and renewable-energy-powered infrastructure, we seek to restore ecological balance and foster a resilient, self-sustaining ecosystem,” B. Padmanabha, Executive Vice President & Director, Manufacturing, Toyota Kirloskar Motor stated.

The handover marks the completion of the current restoration phase, although the long-term success of the project will depend on continued protection, irrigation and monitoring as the plantation matures.

As Indian cities expand and natural habitats face increasing pressure, restoration initiatives involving public authorities and private organisations could play a larger role in protecting biodiversity. At Bannerghatta, the immediate task is more grounded: helping native plants take root, ensuring herbivores have healthier habitats and allowing a carefully restored patch of land to eventually sustain itself.
