Hyundai Foundation Equips Chennai’s RGGGH With 169 Advanced Critical Care Devices

Chennai: Hyundai Motor India Foundation has upgraded the Intensive Surgical Care Unit at Chennai’s Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital through a ₹3.07-crore programme that includes 169 advanced medical devices, technical support and training for healthcare professionals.

The Hyundai Motor India Limited CSR arm carried out the intervention under its flagship healthcare initiative, Sparsh Sanjeevani, which works with government health institutions to strengthen medical infrastructure and improve access to care.

The equipment supplied to the hospital includes ICU beds, ventilators, defibrillators, multiparameter monitors and an ultrasound machine. The programme also covers the installation and commissioning of the devices, along with hands-on training for hospital personnel.

The initiative is intended to improve the hospital’s critical care capacity and support faster, more effective treatment for seriously ill patients. In intensive care, after all, even the most advanced machine is useful only when trained professionals can operate it confidently.

Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, one of India’s largest government hospitals, receives more than 10,000 outpatients each day and serves patients from across Tamil Nadu.

Gopalakrishnan C S, Trustee, Hyundai Motor India Foundation, said, “Strong healthcare systems are fundamental to building a stronger nation. Through this intervention, HMIF is strengthening the capacity of one of Tamil Nadu’s premier government hospitals with advanced medical technology and skilled clinical support. Our endeavour is to empower healthcare professionals with better infrastructure so that more patients receive timely, high-quality treatment. This initiative reflects Hyundai’s commitment to creating lasting social value through our global vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’.”

Healthcare is one of the foundation’s primary areas of focus. Through Sparsh Sanjeevani, HMIF works with public healthcare institutions to improve infrastructure, expand critical care services and increase access to quality treatment for underserved communities.

The programme currently operates across 16 states through Mobile Medical Units and telemedicine centres.

In Tamil Nadu, the foundation has previously supported government healthcare facilities in Cuddalore district by providing Advanced Life Support ambulances, critical care equipment and two Mobile Medical Units.

Hyundai Motor India has also expanded its healthcare-related initiatives through Hyundai Hope for Cancer, launched in partnership with IIT Madras. The programme aims to establish what the company describes as India’s first community-focused cancer tissue biobank.

The biobank is expected to support the Bharat Cancer Genome Atlas and contribute to efforts aimed at improving access to cancer care for economically vulnerable patients.

The Chennai hospital upgrade reflects the growing role of corporate social responsibility programmes in supporting India’s public healthcare network. While equipment alone cannot resolve the pressures faced by large government hospitals, investments combining technology, training and long-term institutional support can help critical care systems respond more effectively when every minute matters.
