Volvo Goes Green in Style: 31% CO₂ Cut, Electrified Sales Surge and Forests Grow Where Dump Yards Once Stood

New Delhi: Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo Cars is showing that going green doesn’t mean going slow. In fact, it’s accelerating—just in a more environmentally responsible lane. According to its Annual and Sustainability Report 2025, the company has reduced CO₂ emissions per car by an impressive 31% compared to its 2018 baseline, proving that sustainability and premium mobility can happily share the same driveway.

A key driver behind this progress is Volvo’s growing electrified portfolio. Nearly 46% of its global sales now come from electrified vehicles and plug-in hybrids, leading to a 42% reduction in tailpipe emissions. In simple terms, Volvo cars are not just moving people—they’re moving closer to a cleaner planet.

The brand has also been quietly transforming its factories into eco-friendly hubs. Seven out of nine production facilities now operate on climate-neutral energy, covering 87% of total operational energy use. That’s not just efficient—it’s almost like the factories have switched from diesel generators to yoga and solar panels.

Volvo’s commitment to a circular economy is equally noteworthy. The company has already exceeded its 2025 goal of using 25% recycled and bio-based materials, with models like the EX60 incorporating 27% recycled content. Meanwhile, water usage per car has dropped by 29%, ensuring that manufacturing doesn’t leave a heavy footprint—because saving the planet shouldn’t come with a water bill.

Back home in India, Volvo Car India is turning sustainability into something you can actually see—and breathe. Through its ‘Reverse Project’, the company has transformed an urban dump yard in Ghaziabad into a thriving green forest by planting over 35,000 native trees, boasting a remarkable 92% survival rate. The initiative has already helped sequester over 42,000 tons of CO₂ and generate nearly 31,000 tons of oxygen—basically giving the city a much-needed green lung.

The green mission doesn’t stop there. Volvo is now planting over 20,000 additional trees at Matri Van along the Gurugram-Faridabad Highway in the Aravalli region, further strengthening its environmental footprint in India. Its dealership network is also stepping up, adopting solar power, water recycling, and responsible waste management practices—because sustainability, much like good design, is all about the details.

“Sustainability remains central to Volvo Cars’ vision globally, and in India we are committed to supporting these ambitions through initiatives such as the Reverse Project and G.R.E.E.N Dealerships,” said Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director, Volvo Car India, reinforcing the brand’s roadmap toward achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

With these milestones, Volvo Cars is not just building safer cars—it’s building a safer future. And if this pace continues, the only thing Volvo might leave behind is… cleaner air.
