Maruti Suzuki WagonR hits 35 lakh production mark, tall-boy legend continues its unstoppable run on Indian roads

If cars had birthday candles, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR would need a rather long cake. India’s favourite tall-boy has crossed a landmark 35 lakh units of cumulative production, spread across three generations, reaffirming its status as one of the most trusted names on Indian roads. With this feat, the WagonR joins elite company alongside the Alto and Swift—models that have not just sold well, but practically grown up with Indian families.

Launched in December 1999, the WagonR’s journey has been less about flash and more about function—winning hearts with its space, efficiency and easy ownership. Today, the model continues to roll out from Maruti Suzuki’s Gurgaon and Manesar plants in Haryana, quietly proving that consistency can be just as exciting as novelty.

Commenting on the milestone, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said,

“This achievement is not just a production milestone, but reflects the enduring love and confidence that generations of customers have shown towards brand WagonR. It is rare for a vehicle to receive such acceptance even after 25 years since its launch. The WagonR kept evolving with the introduction of new technology and features over time, while retaining its original DNA. The WagonR has been highly appreciated for aspects like its iconic tall-boy design, spacious interiors and fuel efficiency. We are deeply grateful for our customers’ continued support and remain committed to providing ‘Joy of Mobility’ for generations to come.”

The WagonR story, however, began well before it entered Indian garages. Suzuki first introduced the WagonR in Japan in September 1993, where its semi-bonnet mini-wagon format became a runaway success for being comfortable, practical and refreshingly easy to live with. Since then, the WagonR has travelled far and wide—manufactured in Japan, India, Hungary and Indonesia, and sold in over 75 countries and regions, including Japan, India and Europe. In another global milestone, Suzuki WagonR crossed 1 crore cumulative sales worldwide in August 2025.

Built for families, refined for today

In India, the WagonR has continuously evolved while staying true to its core strengths. The latest generation is built on the 5th-generation HEARTECT platform and now comes with 6 airbags as standard, along with ABS with EBD and Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)—a clear nod to modern safety expectations.

On the inside, the WagonR keeps things familiar yet contemporary, offering a 17.78 cm (7-inch) SmartPlay Studio touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, Bluetooth connectivity and voice commands—because even the most practical car deserves a little tech indulgence.

Perhaps the biggest validation of its timeless appeal is its sales performance. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR has been India’s highest-selling car for the last four financial years, a title that most models chase but few ever catch.

After 25 years, 35 lakh units, and countless school runs, office commutes and family road trips, the WagonR remains what it has always been—reliable, roomy, and refreshingly honest. Proof that sometimes, standing tall is all it takes to stand the test of time.
