Bypass to the Rescue: Zirakpur’s Urban Jams to Get a 6-Lane Getaway Route under PM GatiShakti Plan
New Delhi/Chandigarh: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has rolled out a much-needed lifeline for the traffic-weary citizens of Zirakpur, Panchkula, and the surrounding Tricity area. In a move that’s both strategic and soothing for sore horns, the Cabinet has approved the construction of a 6-lane, access-controlled Zirakpur Bypass, stretching 19.2 km across Punjab and Haryana, with a price tag of ₹1,878.31 crore.

The project, to be executed on the Hybrid Annuity Mode, aims to divert the relentless stream of vehicles away from the chaotic urban sprawl of Zirakpur and Panchkula. Instead of crawling through red lights and roundabouts, commuters will soon zoom past traffic woes, thanks to a smooth corridor linking NH-7 (Zirakpur-Patiala) with NH-5 (Zirakpur-Parwanoo).
What’s the big deal?
Let’s just say it’s not another road that leads to nowhere. This bypass is a critical piece of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, designed to un-choke the rapidly urbanizing Tricity belt (Chandigarh–Mohali–Panchkula) and offer direct, chaos-free connectivity to Himachal Pradesh, Patiala, Delhi, and even the ever-expanding Mohali Aerocity.
Traffic tantrums, be gone!
If you’ve ever tried crossing Zirakpur at rush hour and aged a few years in the process, this news is worth framing. The bypass promises not only reduced travel time but also improved air quality, lower fuel consumption, and possibly, less road rage (fingers crossed).
Ring Road Vision:
This bypass isn’t a standalone fix—it’s part of a grander plan to form a ring road around Chandigarh’s urban gridlock, a move that urban planners are calling “circle of sanity.” The Zirakpur Bypass is one of the key pieces in this smart infrastructure puzzle.
So next time your Google Maps shows a crimson-red traffic route through Zirakpur, don’t worry—relief is under construction.
Coming soon: Fewer brakes, more breakthroughs.
