Chennai: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), a leader in premium smart mobility solutions, marked a significant milestone in its sustainability journey in 2024. By transporting 26% of its domestic wholesale volume—1,56,724 units—via rail freight, HMIL not only optimized logistics efficiency but also reduced its carbon footprint by an impressive 18,352 tons of CO₂ emissions.
The move aligns with HMIL’s long-term strategy to promote environmentally responsible practices across its operations. Notably, the company achieved a landmark feat by dispatching 100% of its vehicles destined for India’s North-East region exclusively through rail freight in 2024.
A Greener Logistics Path
Commenting on the achievement, Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor India Limited, emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to sustainability.
“At HMIL, we integrate sustainability into every aspect of our operations—from manufacturing to after-sales services. By leveraging Indian Railways’ robust and growing network, we have significantly reduced emissions while ensuring the efficient delivery of vehicles. The adoption of rail freight for 1,56,724 units in 2024 prevented over 18,000 tons of CO₂ emissions, showcasing our dedication to green logistics,” he said.
He also highlighted the synergy between HMIL’s sustainability goals and the Indian government’s investments in modernizing rail infrastructure. “The advent of dedicated freight corridors and energy-efficient rolling stock has made rail transport an increasingly viable and eco-friendly alternative for logistics,” Garg added.
A Four-Year Sustainability Impact
The 2024 achievement is part of a larger, multi-year effort by HMIL to transition to greener logistics. Between 2021 and 2024, the company transported a cumulative 5,37,499 units via rail, preventing a total of 63,452 tons of CO₂ emissions.

As India intensifies its focus on sustainable infrastructure and environmental conservation, Hyundai Motor India Limited is setting a benchmark in the automotive industry. The company’s strategy not only underscores the environmental advantages of rail freight but also reflects its broader vision for a sustainable future.
