Renault Nissan Hits Major Milestone: Chennai Plant Surpasses 4.5 Million Powertrain Units in Production

Chennai – Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL), the key manufacturing hub for the Renault Nissan Alliance, has reached an impressive milestone with the production of over 4.5 million powertrain units at its Oragadam facility near Chennai. This achievement encompasses the assembly of 2.83 million engines and 1.67 million gearboxes since the plant opened in 2010.

Since inception, RNAIPL has not only powered India’s domestic automotive sector but also established itself as an export leader, with more than 2.75 million Renault and Nissan vehicles produced for global markets. The Chennai plant’s integrated facilities include sophisticated engine production capabilities—from aluminum melting, casting of vital components like cylinder heads and blocks, precision machining, to the final assembly. The plant produces engines ranging from 800cc to 1500cc, alongside gearboxes that undergo specialized processes including gear and shaft machining, clutch house machining, and heat treatment.

Over the years, RNAIPL has expanded its portfolio to manufacture seven types of engines and three distinct varieties of gearboxes. The facility marked its first major milestone in 2016, achieving one million engines within six years. Additionally, RNAIPL has produced over 160,000 EV reducer components for export, aligning with the Renault Nissan Alliance’s vision for sustainable mobility.

“This milestone of 4.5 million powertrain units reflects our commitment to quality and innovation. Beyond our contribution to India’s automotive industry, RNAIPL has become an important supplier of powertrain units for international markets,” said Keerthi Prakash, Managing Director of RNAIPL. “With a new USD 600 million investment, we’re preparing for the next phase of growth, equipping our plant to support our upcoming models.”

Among RNAIPL’s top engines is the HR10 TURBO, equipped with advanced mirror bore cylinder coating technology, which enhances engine efficiency by reducing internal resistance, optimizing weight, and improving fuel economy—benefits seen in world-class vehicles like the Nissan GT-R.

To ensure uncompromised quality, RNAIPL’s powertrain division employs robotic vision camera technology for meticulous quality checks at each production stage. Every unit is thoroughly verified before advancing to the next stage, underscoring RNAIPL’s dedication to excellence in every engine and gearbox that leaves its Chennai facility.
