Volkswagen has taken a nostalgic trip down memory lane by unveiling the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE at the ID. Meeting in Locarno, Switzerland. This one-off electric masterpiece is a modern homage to the cult-classic Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice, which gained unexpected popularity in the 1990s. Developed in collaboration with luxury sports fashion brand Bogner, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE merges high-performance electric driving with a design steeped in history and innovation.
A Fusion of Iconic Design and Modern Tech
The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE stuns with its exclusive 3-layer paint finish, featuring a glass bead effect that shifts from dark blue to violet and even black, depending on the light. This Electric Violet pearl effect is a bold reinterpretation of the original Golf Fire and Ice’s exterior, while red accents and 21-inch rims further emphasize the car’s dynamic, sporty appeal.
Volkswagen’s Head of Design, Andreas Mindt, praised the collaboration: “The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE blends our most advanced electric technology with an emotional design that celebrates its iconic predecessor.”
Craftsmanship Meets Comfort
Inside, the car boasts an equally impressive design, with a dual-color scheme that reflects the ‘Fire’ and ‘Ice’ theme—red accents dominate the driver’s side, while cool blue tones characterize the passenger area. High-quality fabrics inspired by Bogner’s iconic down jackets are featured throughout the interior. Notably, the stainless steel pedals bear the ‘FIRE’ and ‘ICE’ logos, adding a playful yet luxurious touch.
Bogner’s Director of FIRE+ICE, Tom Becker, highlighted the unique partnership: “This model is a fresh take on our original collaboration with Volkswagen. We’ve managed to integrate elements from our classic FIRE+ICE collection into the vehicle, making it truly one of a kind.”
Power Meets Precision
Under the hood, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE is powered by Volkswagen’s most robust electric motor to date, delivering 326 PS and a max torque of 545 Nm. With a 79 kWh battery, the vehicle boasts an impressive range of up to 601 km and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. Thanks to its fast-charging capability, the battery can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes.
A Legacy Reborn
The original Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice, first introduced in 1990, became an unexpected hit with its eye-catching design and high-performance engine. What started as a limited edition of 10,000 units turned into a sensation, with 16,700 vehicles sold, cementing its place in automotive history.
Volkswagen’s ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE brings this legacy into the electric age, offering fans a thrilling blend of nostalgic design and cutting-edge performance.
