New Delhi — India is ramping up efforts to secure its position as a global leader in the green hydrogen sector, according to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. Speaking at the curtain-raiser for the upcoming International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH 2024), Joshi emphasized India’s rapid strides in the clean energy domain. The highly anticipated event, set for September 11-13 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, is expected to host over 6,000 participants, including scientists, industry leaders, and policymakers.
“ICGH 2024 represents a crucial step in India’s mission to become the global hub for green hydrogen production,” Joshi said. “Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, we’re positioning India as a dominant force in the clean energy sector, with green hydrogen at the core of our strategy.”
This year’s conference will feature discussions on cutting-edge green hydrogen technology, with a special focus on green financing, human resource development, and innovative startup solutions. Over 120 exhibitors will showcase the latest in green hydrogen products and services, reflecting the exponential growth of the sector since the inaugural event in 2023.
Engaging the Next Generation of Hydrogen Innovators
A key highlight of the event is the “Youth for Green Hydrogen” session, aimed at inspiring the next generation of energy innovators. The initiative includes a Hackathon, quiz, and poster competition designed to foster engagement with young minds, offering substantial prize money for winning participants.
“The GH2thon hackathon will challenge students, entrepreneurs, and researchers to design innovative solutions for India’s green hydrogen ecosystem,” Joshi said. “The goal is to find new ways to boost energy efficiency, integrate hydrogen technology, and optimize supply chains.”
India’s Milestones in Green Hydrogen
Since the launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, India has made significant progress, including a 3,000 MW electrolyser manufacturing capacity and tenders for 450,000 TPA of green hydrogen production. The government has committed ₹400 crores for research, and several pilot projects in the steel, shipping, and mobility sectors are expected to be launched soon.
As India continues to position itself as a leader in the green hydrogen revolution, ICGH 2024 is set to play a pivotal role in bringing together global leaders to collaborate on advancing the clean energy transition.
With the U.S. as the partner country for this year’s conference, the event underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing climate change. “From policy discussions to technology showcases, ICGH 2024 will accelerate India’s green hydrogen journey,” said Bhupinder S. Bhalla, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
India’s green hydrogen future is bright, and as the country takes bold steps towards decarbonization, the world will be watching closely.
