Hybrid Revolution on Track: BMW M5 Debuts as MotoGP Safety Car

Milan, Italy – BMW M is once again pushing the boundaries of innovation and performance with the unveiling of its latest MotoGP safety car – the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car. Making its world debut at a special event in Milan, the electrified high-performance vehicle is set to take the track at this weekend’s Misano Grand Prix.

For over two decades, BMW M has been the official safety car provider for MotoGP, and the newly unveiled BMW M5 continues that tradition of excellence. The car was revealed at the House of BMW in Milan during an exclusive event hosted by Sylvia Neubauer, Vice President of Customer, Brand, and Sales at BMW M GmbH, alongside Massimiliano Di Silvestre, CEO of BMW Italia.

The BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car represents a significant leap forward in hybrid technology, building on BMW’s commitment to sustainable performance. This electrified powerhouse combines a high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor, delivering a staggering 727 horsepower. Equipped with an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive, this safety car is designed to deliver superior control and agility on the racetrack.

“We’re now in our 26th season as the ‘Official Car of MotoGP, and safety has always been our top priority,” Neubauer said during the unveiling. “The BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car continues that tradition with cutting-edge technology and a design rooted in our racing heritage.”

The model’s debut comes on the heels of the BMW M5’s global premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This hybrid machine boasts impressive fuel efficiency, with combined energy consumption as low as 1.6 liters per 100 km, making it both powerful and eco-conscious. Its standout design, featuring wide wheel arches, a sculpted front apron, and a bold graffiti-style livery, is inspired by BMW’s hybrid V8 race cars.

Special modifications for racetrack performance include BMW M Performance Parts like carbon front attachments, an aramid rear diffuser, and a racing-spec interior with Recaro seats and a 6-point harness. With the latest advancements in safety technology, this car is built not just to lead races but to ensure safety under the most extreme conditions.

MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi was among the attendees, celebrating the next chapter of BMW M’s involvement in motorsport. Now competing as a BMW M works driver in the BMW M4 GT3, Rossi embodies the brand’s shift toward hybrid racing performance.

The BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car will make its official track debut on Saturday, September 7th, at the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, ushering in a new era of hybrid-powered race leadership.
