Renault’s Iconic 1970s Sports Coupé Reborn: A Bold Collaboration Between Ora Ïto and Electric Restomod

In a stunning fusion of retro charm and cutting-edge design, Renault and renowned French designer Ora Ïto have unveiled the R17 Electric Restomod, a modern reimagining of the classic Renault 17. Originally launched in 1971, the Renault 17 was a symbol of style and innovation in the 1970s, and this latest restomod takes the car’s legacy to electrifying new heights.

Unveiled at Maison5 in Paris on September 4, the R17 Electric Restomod will be on display at the Paris Motor Show from October 14-20, marking the latest chapter in Renault’s collaboration with contemporary designers. Over the past few years, Renault has worked with some of the most innovative minds in design to reimagine its iconic vehicles. This year, Ora Ïto’s bold and futuristic interpretation brings the Renault 17 into the electric era with style and sophistication.

A Bold Reinvention of a Classic

The R17 Electric Restomod is not just a throwback; it’s a bold leap into the future. Ora Ïto, known for his minimalist approach and mastery of “simplexity”—the blending of simplicity and complexity—has transformed the Renault 17 into a sculptural masterpiece. This sleek, futuristic coupé retains the essence of the original while incorporating a modern aesthetic that feels like a work of art on wheels.

Underneath its carbon-fiber skin, the restomod is equipped with a 270 bhp all-electric powertrain, giving the classic sports coupé a new lease on life. The body has been widened by 17 cm for enhanced handling, while its flush lines and lightweight design emphasize elegance and performance.

A Look Back: Renault’s Journey with Designers

Renault’s collaboration with Ora Ïto is the fourth in a series of creative partnerships that started in 2021. Each year, Renault has teamed up with different designers to celebrate milestones in the company’s history. From the nomadic “Suite N°4” concept by Mathieu Lehanneur to Pierre Gonalons’ electric take on the R5, and Sabine Marcelis’ artistic reinvention of the Twingo, these collaborations have been a celebration of innovation and heritage.

An Avant-Garde Interior Experience

Inside the R17 Electric Restomod, Ora Ïto’s design philosophy continues to shine. The interior blends modern luxury with nostalgic touches, featuring redesigned seats that pay homage to the original Renault 17’s “petal” structure. The dashboard has been modernized with a central screen and four geometric displays behind the steering wheel, inspired by the original model’s gauges. The use of fine Merino wool and high-end fabrics brings an extra layer of sophistication to the restomod’s cabin.

The Perfect Balance of Heritage and Innovation

Arnaud Belloni, Renault’s Chief Branding Officer, spoke of the balance between the brand’s heritage and its forward-looking approach: “The R17 Electric Restomod perfectly captures Renault’s spirit of innovation. It’s a celebration of one of our most iconic models, but it’s also a bold step into the future. This collaboration with Ora Ïto is a testament to Renault’s ability to honor the past while embracing modernity.”

Renault enthusiasts and car lovers alike can look forward to seeing this one-of-a-kind vehicle in person at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.
