Mercedes-Benz Pioneers Level 4 Autonomous Driving Tests in Beijing, Marking a Global Milestone

In a groundbreaking development, Mercedes-Benz has become the first international automaker to secure approval for Level 4 automated driving tests on designated urban roads and highways in Beijing. This approval marks a significant leap in the brand’s journey towards autonomous driving technology, setting new benchmarks for the industry.

The testing, integral to Mercedes-Benz China’s technological research initiatives, aims to advance the development of both software and hardware for automated driving systems. This effort aligns with the company’s longstanding tradition of innovation, tracing back to its invention of the automobile 138 years ago. The recent approval builds on Mercedes-Benz’s earlier success in obtaining Level 3 testing approval in Beijing at the end of 2023.

“With this approval for Level 4 technology testing, Mercedes-Benz continues to redefine the role of the automobile,” said Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer. “This advancement is another step forward in our pursuit of fully autonomous driving, where the vehicle takes on even greater responsibility in various driving scenarios.”

Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to cutting-edge innovation is evident in the sophisticated technology being tested. Two specially upgraded S‑Class models, equipped with an array of advanced sensors including LiDAR, radar, and cameras, will navigate the challenging conditions of Beijing’s urban roads. These vehicles are designed to handle complex maneuvers such as unprotected left turns, navigating roundabouts, and executing automatic lane changes on highways. In extreme situations, the vehicles are programmed to execute minimal risk maneuvers, ensuring maximum safety.

The significance of this testing goes beyond local impact. Mercedes-Benz China plays a crucial role in the brand’s global research and development network for automated driving technology. “Our local R&D team is instrumental in bringing intelligent luxury products to Chinese customers, and this approval will further accelerate our global efforts,” said Oliver Löcher, Senior Executive Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Group China Ltd.

Mercedes-Benz’s achievements in automated driving are the result of decades of exploration and investment, beginning as early as 1986. The company’s R&D activities in China, which started in 2005, have grown into the most comprehensive network outside Germany. With a total investment of RMB 10.5 billion (INR 12,291 crore) over the past five years, Mercedes-Benz has established new R&D centers in Beijing and Shanghai, reinforcing its commitment to innovation in the world’s largest automotive market.

As the world watches, Mercedes-Benz continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in automated driving, with the goal of eventually bringing these advancements to privately-owned vehicles worldwide.
