Farnborough, United Kingdom, July 22, 2024 – In a significant move to bolster its long-haul capabilities, Korean Air has announced a substantial commitment to Boeing’s advanced widebody aircraft. The airline plans to acquire up to 50 new planes, including 20 Boeing 777-9s and 20 Boeing 787-10s, with options for an additional 10 of the largest 787 Dreamliner variants.
This strategic decision supports Korean Air’s goal to expand and modernize its fleet, enhancing its ability to serve high-demand routes across Europe, North America, and Asia. The new aircraft will provide the airline with increased range and capacity, aligning with its plans for growth and its upcoming merger with Asiana Airlines.

Once finalized and listed on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website, this acquisition will place Korean Air among the latest airlines to benefit from the world’s largest and most fuel-efficient twin-engine jets. The 777-9, capable of seating 426 passengers over a range of 13,500 km, and the 787-10, accommodating up to 336 passengers with a range of 11,730 km, will significantly enhance Korean Air’s operational capabilities.

The Boeing 777-9 integrates cutting-edge technologies from the 787 Dreamliner family, such as carbon-fiber composite wings and advanced engines, offering a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency, CO2 emissions, and operating costs over competitors. The 787’s fuel efficiency has also been a significant factor in reducing over 169 billion pounds of CO2 emissions since its introduction.
