Unparalleled Luxury and Performance: The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLS Review

The Mercedes-Benz GLS, an American full-size luxury SUV, made its debut in 2006. The 2023 model you see here is part of the third-generation facelift. The GLS comes in two primary models: the petrol 450, priced at INR 1.32 crore (ex-showroom), and the diesel 450d, priced at INR 1.37 crore (ex-showroom). This review focuses on the GLS 450 variant.

For those seeking the pinnacle of luxury, the Maybach GLS, an ultra-luxury version, is available at a price tag of INR 3 crore. Often referred to as the S-Class of SUVs, the GLS has sold over 12,000 units in India, making it Mercedes’ top-selling large-size luxury SUV. Its assembly takes place in the USA, Indonesia, and Thailand, and it was designed by Balázs Filczer, who also designed the G-Class. The codename for this generation of GLS is X167.

Performance and Powertrain
Both the petrol and diesel variants feature a 48-volt EQ Boost mild hybrid system, which provides an additional 20 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. The GLS is equipped with a 4MAatic four-wheel-drive system, enhancing its capability and performance. This seven-seater SUV offers a three-year warranty from Mercedes.

The GLS 450 petrol variant boasts a 3.0-litre, inline 6-cylinder, twin-turbocharged Mercedes-Benz M256M E30 DEH engine, producing 381 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h, with an estimated fuel efficiency of 8 km/l and a 90-liter fuel tank.

On the other hand, the diesel variant features a 3.0-litre, inline 6-cylinder, twin-turbocharged Mercedes-Benz OM 656 M engine, delivering 367 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. It also achieves 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h, and a fuel tank capacity of 90 liters. Both engines are mated to 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission.

Design and Dimensions
The GLS features a G-Wagon-inspired grille and automatic Multi Beam LED headlamps with adaptive high beam assistant plus. It includes magic vision control rain-sensing wipers, electrically folding auto-dimming outside mirrors with turn indicators and cameras, and illuminated running boards with rubber studs. The vehicle measures 5.2 meters in length, 2.1 meters in width, and 1.8 meters in height, with a kerb weight of 2700 kg and a gross weight of 3300 kg. It can tow up to 3500 kg, has a 12.5-meter turning circle, can wade through water up to 500 mm, and boasts a 100% slope climbing ability.

The GLS 450 sits on 21-inch 5-triple spoke light alloy wheels, fitted with Michelin Green X Latitude Sport 3 MO made-in-Hungary radial tubeless tires (275/45 R21 107Y at the front and 315/40 R21 111Y at the rear). The Sodalite Blue color option is shown here, but it also comes in grey, black, white, and silver.

Interior and Comfort
Inside, the GLS offers a 64-color ambient lighting system, piano lacquer gloss trim, and Artico man-made leather upholstery with beige and black color options. The second-row seats are tiltable, and the vehicle supports the MBUX Rear Seat Entertainment System, including HDMI, Bluetooth, voice assistant, and more.

The Widescreen Cockpit features a 7.4-inch MBUX Samsung tablet for controlling comfort functions, ambient lighting, temperature, music, and more. Power closing doors and electrically adjustable front seats with 4-way lumbar support, massage, ventilation, and heating functions add to the luxury. The steering is direct, and the vehicle includes a 5-zone Thermotronic automatic climate control AC with a fine dust-activated carbon filter, defrosting system, and residual heat function.

Infotainment and Connectivity
The MBUX infotainment system supports music streaming, TuneIn, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, internet radio, podcasts, adaptive voice assistant, Wi-Fi hotspot, natural language understanding, hard-disc 3D map navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, NTG 7 software generation, USB, FM, and radio. The diesel variant also features Energizing Air Control.

Safety and Assistance
Safety features include 9 airbags, ABS, brake assist, active bonnet, car wash function, transparent bonnet view, 360-degree camera, Driving Assistance Package, blind-spot assist, alarm system, immobilizer, attention assist, electronic stability program, Acceleration Skid Control, Four-wheel Electronic Traction System, Guard 360° vehicle protection, child seat mounting, remote central locking, and tire pressure monitoring system.

Suspension and Handling
The GLS features Airmatic air suspension with an adaptive damping system, adjusting the chassis according to driving situation, speed, and load for optimal stability and comfort. All-round level control lowers the car automatically at high speeds, and a load detection system maintains constant suspension levels. The front and side windows are laminated safety glass for better noise comfort, and the Acoustic Comfort package ensures minimal external noise intrusion.

Practicality and Boot Space
The GLS offers a 355-liter boot space, which expands to 890 liters with the third row folded and 1470 liters with the second row folded. The Burmester surround Dolby Atmos sound system with 13 speakers and 590 watts provides an exceptional audio experience, complemented by advanced noise compensation.

Additional Features and Accessories
The Mercedes me connect app allows digital key transfer, and the vehicle includes a 3-year 24×7 Mobilo support with services like vehicle towing, replacement vehicle, and hotel accommodation. Accessories include a hub car, valve cap, microfiber cloth, coolbox, ashtray, floor mats, shopping crate, car care kit, storage net, and more.
