PHILADELPHIA, July 1, 2024 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] has marked a significant milestone in U.S. Army aviation with the delivery of the first CH-47F Block II Chinook, signaling a major leap in the modernization of the Army’s fleet. This delivery is the beginning of a comprehensive upgrade plan for up to 465 Chinooks.
“The CH-47F Block II brings remarkable enhancements that allow the U.S. Army to carry heavier loads, extend flight range, and streamline maintenance processes,” stated Heather McBryan, Vice President and Program Manager for Cargo Programs at Boeing. “This upgrade ensures the Chinook remains a crucial asset in multi-domain operations for the foreseeable future.”
The CH-47F Block II features substantial improvements, including an upgraded drivetrain, reinforced airframe, and an advanced fuel system. These enhancements collectively increase the maximum gross weight capacity by 4,000 pounds and extend the mission radius for nearly all payloads. Furthermore, the design allows for seamless integration of future technological advancements.
“The CH-47F Block II is poised to be the Army’s heavy-lift workhorse of tomorrow, delivering enhanced capabilities while maintaining the Army’s strategic responsiveness across various operational contexts,” said Viva Kelly, Acting Project Manager for U.S. Army Cargo Helicopters.
The Block II program also significantly boosts aircraft sustainment. The new rotor system’s enhanced reliability reduces unscheduled maintenance, and the streamlined fuel system improves sustainment efficiency, ultimately lowering maintenance demands and costs.
