NHAI Collaborates with IIIT Delhi to Enhance Road Safety Using AI Technology

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi, aiming to improve road safety through the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions. This partnership focuses on enhancing the availability and condition of road signs on national highways.

Under the agreement, IIIT Delhi will conduct comprehensive surveys to collect imagery and related data on road signage across selected stretches of national highways, covering an estimated 25,000 kilometers. The collected data will be processed using AI technology to accurately identify and classify road signs. The resulting survey report will provide a geo-stamped inventory of existing road signs, including their categorization, structural condition, and other relevant details.

Additionally, IIIT Delhi will perform a gap analysis, comparing the survey findings with the approved road signage plans outlined in respective contract agreements. This analysis will also consider the latest codal provisions for high-speed corridors to ensure enhanced safety standards are met.

By leveraging the capabilities of AI and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), NHAI aims to significantly improve road safety for all national highway users through the adoption of innovative and advanced technologies.
