Mercedes-AMG’s souped-up GT3 has left the competition in the dust at Australia’s legendary Mount Panorama Circuit, rewriting the record books in the process. Behind the wheel of this aerodynamic marvel, Performance Driver Jules Gounon tore through the track, clocking a blistering 1m 56.605s lap time. This feat not only smashed the previous GT lap record but also marked a historic moment for Mercedes-AMG Motorsport during its celebratory year in Australia.
Dubbed an “anniversary highlight,” the record-setting run showcased the Mercedes-AMG GT3’s raw power and sophisticated engineering. With Gounon at the helm, the car, boasting about 650 hp, navigated the 6.213-kilometer course at an average speed that would make your head spin—191.82 kph, to be precise. This monumental lap outpaced the former record holder by a solid 2.074 seconds, proving the GT3’s unmatched potential.
The Mercedes-AMG team’s preparations paid off spectacularly, with the GT3’s 6.2-litre V8 engine, free from air restrictors and aided by F1-inspired drag reduction systems, hitting speeds of over 308 kph. The car’s design, featuring a revamped aerodynamics package, played a crucial role, especially in the circuit’s challenging middle sector, known for its fast corners.
On the eve of the Repco Bathurst 12 Hour race, the GT3 underwent a shakedown to fine-tune its performance. The following day, Gounon and the GT3 went on to break the record not once, but twice, under ideal conditions, solidifying their place in Bathurst lore.
Christoph Sagemüller, Head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, couldn’t hide his pride, stating, “What an incredible lap Jules pulled off here on the Mount Panorama today!” He highlighted the significance of this achievement in the context of Mercedes-AMG’s 130th anniversary in motorsport, emphasizing the brand’s enduring commitment to competition, innovation, and record-chasing.
Gounon himself reflected on the experience with awe, noting the Mount Panorama Circuit’s unique challenge and beauty. “The record lap demanded everything from me,” he admitted, praising the car’s performance and the team’s engineering prowess.
As Mercedes-AMG celebrates this monumental achievement, the motorsport world looks on in admiration, reminded once again of the thrilling possibilities when man, machine, and the spirit of competition converge on one of the world’s most exhilarating racetracks.
