MINI Electrifies 2023: Sales Zoom and Batteries Boom as Electric Models Take the Wheel

2023 saw a seismic shift in the automotive world, and MINI was at the forefront, driving home impressive growth with a notable surge in Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) adoption. As champions of innovation and eco-friendliness, MINI’s 2023 sales triumph has set a new high-water mark in the brand’s journey towards a greener automotive horizon.

From the heart of Munich, the electrifying news broke: a whopping 15.3% of MINI’s total sales in 2023 were fully electric models. Electrified vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, made up 20.8% of sales. The current MINI generation, bidding farewell in its last full year, revved up the sales charts with a total of 295,474 vehicles sold, a modest yet significant 0.9% increase from the previous year. This lineup, including the MINI 3- and 5-Door, Convertible, Countryman, and Clubman, dazzled consumers worldwide with special and limited editions, adding a dash of exclusivity to their final lap.

A star of the show was the MINI John Cooper Works 1to6, a limited edition of just 999 units, marking the last of its kind with a manual transmission. It made a victorious debut at the 24 hours of the Nürburgring, clinching a podium finish. The MINI Clubman Final Edition, comprising 1,969 high-spec vehicles, marked a grand finale for the Clubman series.

A key driver of MINI’s 2023 success story was the significant uptick in Battery Electric Vehicle adoption. A record 45,261 customers went fully electric, opting for the zippy MINI Cooper SE 3-door or the trailblazing, limited-run MINI Cooper SE Convertible, the brand’s first-ever electric convertible. This marked a 3.5% increase in sales of fully electric models, underlining MINI’s commitment to sustainable mobility.

Stefanie Wurst, Head of MINI, reflected on the year, “2023 has been a landmark year for MINI. The swift adoption of our fully-electric vehicles is a testament to our dedication to a greener future. With the upcoming all-new MINI Family, we’re geared up to continue revolutionizing the driving experience while bolstering our commitment to sustainable automotive solutions. The rousing response to our new, fully electric MINI Family at IAA Mobility, featuring the MINI Cooper and the MINI Countryman, is just the beginning.”

The all-electric MINI Cooper SE and MINI Cooper E, along with the all-electric MINI Countryman SE ALL4 and the MINI Countryman E, are set to redefine the road with their advanced technology, exhilarating digital experience, and significantly improved range.

In a tantalizing teaser, MINI also hinted at the upcoming MINI Aceman, a fully-electric compact five-seater crossover, set to be unveiled in two specifications.

Looking ahead to 2024, MINI plans to launch internal combustion engine variants of its vehicles, offering customers a diverse array of drivetrain technologies to choose from.
