The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is electrifying the nation’s roadways with a series of innovative policies aimed at promoting vehicles that run on anything but fossil fuels. From CNG and LNG to electric vehicles (EVs) and biofuels, India is paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable mode of transportation.
With the notification of mass emission standards for an array of non-fossil fuels, including ethanol, biodiesel, and even hydrogen, the ministry is fueling the country’s drive towards environmental sustainability. The color-coded registration marks—yellow on green for transport vehicles, and white on green for others—now make EVs not only visible but also fashionable.
The exemption of battery-operated and ethanol-powered transport vehicles from the burdens of permits and the waiver of fees for registration and new registration marks underscore the government’s commitment to eco-friendly mobility. Moreover, the introduction of an All India Tourist Permit for EVs, free of charge, and the endorsement of retrofitting conventional vehicles with electric kits, demonstrate a comprehensive approach to fostering a clean transport ecosystem.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries is also accelerating the EV adoption with lucrative schemes such as the FAME India Scheme Phase-II, the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for the auto sector, and the National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cells Battery Storage. These initiatives, backed by significant financial outlays, aim to make India a hub for electric and hybrid vehicle manufacturing and use.
As articulated by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, these steps represent a concerted effort by the Indian government to drive the country into a future where the streets are lined with vehicles that are as kind to the environment as they are to the economy. With policies that incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles, India is not just on the road to reducing carbon emissions but is also setting the pace for a global green transport revolution.
