Hyundai Bluelink Customers Can Now Earn Insurance Discounts Based on Driving Behaviour

Gurugram: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has introduced a Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) programme for eligible customers with Bluelink-connected vehicles, allowing responsible drivers to potentially save up to 15% on the own-damage component of their motor insurance premiums. The initiative links insurance benefits to actual driving behaviour, offering customers a financial incentive to adopt safer habits behind the wheel.

Developed in association with participating insurance companies, the programme uses Hyundai’s connected-car technology to evaluate driving patterns and generate a personalised score. Customers with favourable scores may qualify for additional insurance benefits when renewing their policies, subject to the insurers’ underwriting rules.

The first phase includes three insurance partners: Cholamandalam MS General Insurance, Go Digit General Insurance and ICICI Lombard General Insurance.

Hyundai India Insurance Broking (HIIB) will act as an intermediary, facilitating the consent-based sharing of driving scores with participating insurers.

How Hyundai’s Usage-Based Insurance Works

Unlike conventional motor insurance models, which primarily assess factors such as vehicle characteristics, location and claims history, Hyundai’s UBI programme incorporates real-world driving behaviour into the underwriting process.

The system analyses vehicle data collected through Hyundai’s Bluelink connected-car platform over the preceding three months. It considers several parameters, including rapid acceleration, rapid deceleration, sudden braking, speed control and idling behaviour.

The collected information generates a UBI score that customers can access through the Bluelink App without installing additional hardware or monitoring devices.

Customers whose insurance policies are due for renewal within the next 90 days can review their scores, check eligibility and choose whether to share their driving information with participating insurers.

A UBI score of 70 or above may qualify customers for insurance benefits, depending on the underwriting criteria, terms and conditions of the participating insurer.

Drivers scoring below 70 will receive personalised driving tips through the application, allowing them to improve their driving habits and potentially become eligible for benefits in the future.

In other words, smoother acceleration and fewer abrupt braking episodes could eventually mean more than a comfortable journey. They might also leave a little extra money in the driver’s pocket.

Hyundai Says Insurance Savings Could Reach 15%

Announcing the initiative, Tarun Garg, MD & CEO, HMIL, said:

“Hyundai Motor India’s connected car ecosystem continues to witness strong growth, with over 0.8 million connected cars already on Indian roads, a target of 1 million cumulative connected car sales by 2027 and an ambition to reach 2 million connected car sales by 2030 through its Bluelink platform. Leveraging this expanding connected-car ecosystem, the Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) program extends the value of connected mobility beyond convenience and safety by rewarding responsible driving with personalized insurance benefits. In certain cases, customers may save up to 15% (basis insurers underwriting rules) on the own-damage component of their insurance premium, making vehicle ownership safer, smarter and more rewarding.”

The potential 15% saving applies specifically to the own-damage component rather than the entire insurance premium. Actual savings will depend on individual driving scores and the underwriting policies of participating insurers.

The programme will be available to eligible customers across Hyundai’s product portfolio equipped with Bluelink connectivity, provided their insurance renewal falls within the applicable eligibility window.

The introduction of usage-based insurance forms part of Hyundai’s broader efforts to expand the functionality of its Bluelink ecosystem.

The manufacturer has previously introduced features such as Digital Passport, which provides vehicle health information, and Remote Immobilizer, designed to enhance vehicle security.

With UBI, Hyundai is extending connected-car capabilities into the financial aspects of vehicle ownership, using driving data to support more personalised insurance offerings.

The company also believes that maintaining a record of responsible driving could contribute to better vehicle ownership histories and potentially improve resale value. However, any such benefit would depend on how vehicle buyers and the used-car market assess that information.

A New Approach to Motor Insurance in India

Usage-based insurance represents a shift towards evaluating how a vehicle is driven rather than relying exclusively on conventional risk indicators.

For insurers, connected-vehicle data can provide additional information when assessing individual driving risks. For motorists, the arrangement introduces a potentially measurable financial benefit for safer driving, although the final premium remains subject to each insurer’s assessment.

Customer consent will remain central to the programme, with eligible Hyundai owners retaining the option to share their driving scores through the Bluelink App.

As connected vehicles become increasingly common on Indian roads, initiatives such as Hyundai’s UBI programme could influence how motor insurance is priced and personalised. Whether the model gains widespread acceptance will depend on the savings insurers offer, customer confidence in data handling and the extent to which safer driving translates into meaningful financial rewards.

For now, Hyundai is introducing a straightforward proposition: responsible driving may not only reduce the risk of an accident but could also make the next insurance renewal a little less expensive.
