Tata Intra V70 Gold Review: The Silent Workhorse That Carries India on Its Shoulders

If India had a LinkedIn profile for hardworking vehicles, the Tata Intra would probably be listed as “Available for heavy lifting, long hours, and zero complaints.” And frankly, that wouldn’t be far from the truth.

Launched in 2019, the Tata Intra isn’t just another pickup truck—it’s Tata Motors’ answer to the question: “What if a truck could work like a labourer but think like a manager?” What you’re looking at here is the first-generation model, specifically the top-spec V70 Gold variant, and it proudly carries forward Tata’s “Premium Tough” philosophy—basically meaning it can haul bricks all day and still give you enough comfort to sip chai without spilling it.

Let’s start with the basics. The Intra range begins at an ex-showroom price of ₹8.15 lakh and stretches up to ₹12.30 lakh for this V70 Gold. And for those who like their purchases EMI-friendly, Tata even throws in a cheeky promise—own one at around ₹22,000 monthly EMI. A truck that works hard and pays for itself? That’s practically a financial advisor on wheels.

Now, visually, the Intra doesn’t try to look fancy—and that’s exactly its charm. It’s honest, upright, and built like it has deadlines to meet. The 2-door steel boltable shell cabin screams durability, while the grey paint (also available in brown, blue, and white) gives it a subtle industrial confidence. You won’t find chrome overload here, but you will find something more valuable—purpose.

Underneath this no-nonsense design lies a seriously strong backbone. Built using hydroforming processes and robotic manufacturing, the chassis has fewer welding joints, which means more structural strength and durability. In simple terms, it’s like going to the gym and skipping shortcuts—this thing is built properly. With a gross vehicle weight of 3500 kg and a payload capacity of 2000 kg, the Intra is not here to play—it’s here to carry your business on its shoulders.

And speaking of carrying, the load body is where things get impressive. At 3.1 metres long and 1.7 metres wide, it’s practically a moving warehouse. The diesel variant gets a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder common rail turbo intercooled engine producing 80 horsepower and 220 Nm of torque. It’s paired with a G5 220 5-speed manual gearbox and delivers a top speed of 80 km/h with an average of around 15 km/l. Not fast, but then again, this truck measures success in tonnes, not seconds.

If you prefer petrol, there’s a 57 horsepower 3-cylinder option, while the CNG variant offers 53 horsepower for those chasing lower running costs. And for the future-ready entrepreneurs, there’s an EV version with a 28.2 kWh battery delivering a claimed range of 211 km—perfect for city logistics without the fuel bills haunting your dreams.

Driving the Intra is surprisingly easy, thanks to hydraulic assisted power steering. It’s not feather-light like a hatchback, but for a truck carrying 2 tonnes, it feels almost polite. There’s also an eco switch and gear shift advisor to help you extract maximum efficiency—because every drop of fuel saved is extra profit earned.

The suspension setup is built for punishment. Up front, you get 2 parabolic leaf springs, while the rear gets semi-elliptical 11 leaf springs. Translation? Braking duties are handled by disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear, riding on 15-inch steel wheels wrapped in Apollo EnduMaxx LT tyres—basically tyres that look like they’ve seen things.

Step inside, and you’ll find a cabin that’s simple but functional. Vinyl upholstery ensures durability, while the wide walk-through cabin adds practicality. It’s not luxurious, but it’s thoughtfully designed for long working hours. The automatically adjustable clutch reduces driver fatigue, and lower NVH levels mean you won’t feel like you’re sitting inside a drum.

Tata has also ensured peace of mind with a 3-year/1 lakh km warranty, along with a 24-hour toll-free helpline. Add to that Tata Samarth and Sampoorna Seva packages, and ownership becomes less about stress and more about productivity.

One particularly interesting detail—this truck doesn’t use DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), which keeps running costs lower. It’s a small thing, but in the commercial world, small savings add up faster than WhatsApp forwards in a family group.

And then there’s the 31% gradeability. Whether it’s steep ghat roads or urban flyovers loaded to the brim, the Intra climbs like it has unfinished business at the top.
