Revving Back to the Streets: Maverick Lobo Reignites the Era of Performance Trucks

The Maverick Lobo, inspired by the iconic lowered trucks of the mid-1980s to early 2000s, is set to bring a new wave of street-performance enthusiasts into the fold. Drawing on the heritage of custom performance builds, the Maverick Lobo is a modern homage to the era, crafted for those eager to personalize their trucks.

Josh Blundo, a Maverick designer at Ford since 2019, saw the potential for a street-performance variant from the outset. His vision of a widebody, winged, and splitter-equipped Maverick led to a collaboration with Tucci Hot Rods, resulting in a celebrated build at the 2021 Special Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) trade show. This success set the stage for the Maverick Lobo’s official development.

Engineers like Keith Daugherty then took the reins, fine-tuning springs, suspension, and incorporating components from other Ford performance models to create an authentic on-road performance truck. The Maverick Lobo boasts a lowered ride height and on-road tuned suspension, featuring shocks and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, rigorously tested to Built Ford Tough standards and supported by a factory warranty.

The Maverick Lobo’s ride height is dropped by half an inch in the front and 1.12 inches in the rear compared to the standard Maverick, with the overall roof height reduced by 0.8 inches. Performance-tuned steering and a torque-vectoring twin-clutch rear drive unit, borrowed from the Bronco Sport, transform the driving experience into that of a performance car. Enhanced brakes, including dual-piston front calipers from the European Focus ST, ensure superior stopping power.

A new Lobo drive mode, inspired by drifting and autocross, enhances cornering performance, grip, and stability, reducing understeer. This mode is designed for closed courses, activating torque vectoring while minimizing stability control, akin to the Mustang’s track mode. Additionally, the cooling system has been upgraded, utilizing components from the Maverick’s 4K towing package.

Visually, the Maverick Lobo retains the Maverick’s essence with a unique twist. It features a distinct front fascia, painted rear bumper, rocker moldings, black-painted roof, and 19-inch black wheels. Inside, the design draws from street art and streetwear trends, with Grabber Blue and Electric Lime accent stitching, graffiti-inspired seat overprints, and the Lobo name embossed on the seats.

The Maverick Lobo is available in two configurations: standard and high. The standard includes all the performance and design enhancements, while the high configuration adds premium comforts like a heated steering wheel and seats, Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0 driver-assist technologies, a 360-degree camera, spray-in bedliners, and a moonroof. From early 2025, the high configuration will also offer Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, simplifying the process of hitching and backing up trailers.

Ordering for the 2025 Maverick Lobo opens on August 1, with deliveries starting early in 2025, and late availability for high configuration models.
