Stellantis to Use Tata Motors Vehicle Platforms Under New Global Product Development Agreement

Mumbai/Pune: Stellantis and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited (TMPV) have signed a definitive agreement to expand their long-standing partnership into advanced vehicle technology and product development, paving the way for vehicles engineered and manufactured in India for more than 50 international markets.

The agreement, announced on Monday by Stellantis India, TMPV and its subsidiary Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEM), builds on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in February 2026. It marks a significant expansion of a relationship spanning more than two decades, with both automotive groups seeking to strengthen India’s position in the global vehicle development and manufacturing industry.

Under the agreement, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles will provide Stellantis access to its advanced product technologies and vehicle architectures. Stellantis will use its engineering and product development capabilities in India to develop vehicles tailored to the requirements of more than 50 global markets.

The vehicles will be adapted to meet different customer expectations, regulatory standards and operating conditions across international markets.

Vehicles to Be Manufactured at Existing Joint Venture

Production of vehicles developed under the new arrangement will take place in India through Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited (FIAPL), the existing 50:50 joint venture between Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Stellantis.

The manufacturing arrangement allows both companies to build on their established industrial partnership while expanding cooperation into vehicle architecture and technology development.

The February 2026 MoU initially outlined opportunities for collaboration in manufacturing, engineering and supply chain operations in India and overseas. The latest definitive agreement provides a more specific framework for technology sharing and product development.

For Tata Motors, the agreement creates an opportunity to extend the international reach of its vehicle technology and architecture capabilities. For Stellantis, it offers access to Indian-developed technologies while supporting its ambitions to expand vehicle production and exports from the country.

The companies have not disclosed specific vehicle models, production volumes, investment commitments or launch timelines under the agreement.

Tata Motors Sees New Opportunity for Global Expansion

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director & CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, described the agreement as an important development in the companies’ long-standing relationship.

“Our partnership with Stellantis has grown steadily over more than two decades, built on mutual trust and complementary strengths. This Agreement marks an important next step, extending our relationship into advanced vehicle technology and architecture, reflecting the strength and competitiveness of TMPV’s capabilities in these areas. We are delighted that Stellantis will leverage them to develop products for global markets. Together, we have an exciting opportunity to combine our respective strengths to create compelling vehicles engineered and made in India for customers in India and around the world.”

The statement highlights Tata Motors’ intention to position its engineering and technology capabilities beyond its domestic vehicle portfolio, potentially opening additional opportunities for international product development.

Stellantis Aims to Strengthen India’s Role in Global Operations

Tianshu Xin, Chief Operating Officer, Stellantis Asia-Pacific Region, said the agreement would combine the capabilities of both companies to support international market expansion.

“Partnerships are central to how Stellantis creates value across Asia-Pacific. By combining Tata Motors’ strong capabilities in India with Stellantis’ global product development and market reach, this Agreement will help us develop competitive vehicles in India and expand our export potential across international markets. It also reinforces India’s growing role as a strategic manufacturing and development hub for Stellantis.”

Stellantis operates a portfolio of 14 automotive brands and maintains a presence across Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific.

Its international product development experience, engineering resources and distribution networks are expected to complement Tata Motors’ vehicle technology and manufacturing capabilities.

The arrangement is intended to support vehicles designed for varied international markets rather than focusing exclusively on domestic Indian requirements.

India Moves Further Into Global Automotive Development

The expanded partnership reflects a broader strategic emphasis on India’s role in the automotive industry, particularly in vehicle engineering, manufacturing and exports.

Traditionally regarded as an important production base, India is increasingly being positioned by automotive manufacturers as a location for developing products intended for international customers.

The new agreement also indicates how established manufacturing partnerships can evolve into deeper engineering collaborations. Rather than simply sharing production facilities, Tata Motors and Stellantis will now bring together their respective vehicle technologies and development expertise.

For both companies, the success of the arrangement will ultimately depend on translating their combined capabilities into competitive vehicles suited to diverse markets.

The agreement represents a notable step in India’s automotive ambitions, with locally developed vehicle technology set to play a greater role in international product portfolios. As global manufacturers reassess their engineering and production strategies, the Tata Motors–Stellantis partnership could become an important example of how India contributes not only to building vehicles for the world, but also to developing them.
