Gurugram: Anish Bhujle of Mumbai and Vikas Mahajan of Muradabad have emerged as the national champions of the BMW Golf Cup 2026, securing their places at the prestigious BMW Golf Cup World Final scheduled to take place in South Africa in March 2027. The two amateur golfers claimed victory in their respective handicap categories during the 16th edition of the tournament’s India final, held at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurugram.

Organised by BMW Group India, the tournament witnessed participation from 2,300 amateur golfers across the country, with 40 players advancing through regional qualifying rounds to compete in the national final.

Bhujle secured the Category A championship, contested by golfers with handicaps of up to 12, while Mahajan emerged victorious in Category B, which accommodates handicaps ranging from 13 to 28.

The two winners will now form Team India at the international championship, where they will compete against leading amateur golfers from participating countries.

BMW Golf Cup 2026 Attracts 2,300 Golfers Across India

The 2026 edition marked another significant chapter for the BMW Golf Cup in India, with qualifying tournaments conducted across 13 cities, including Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Vadodara, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Patna, Kolkata and Gurugram.

The regional rounds brought together amateur golfers competing for a place among the country’s top 40 finalists.

The national championship at DLF Golf and Country Club ultimately determined the two players who would earn the opportunity to represent India internationally.

Commenting on the tournament, Hardeep Singh Brar, President & CEO, BMW Group India, said, “The BMW Golf Cup is more than a celebration of sporting excellence, it is a powerful expression of performance, passion and the strength of the BMW community. This year, the tournament reached a new milestone, bringing together 2,300 amateur golfers from across India, with 40 exceptional players advancing to the national final. I congratulate our winners on this outstanding achievement. As they step onto the global stage to represent India at the World Final, they carry the pride and support of the entire BMW community. Through distinctive experiences such as the BMW Golf Cup, we continue to bring our customers together and create memorable moments that reflect the spirit of BMW.”

From a British Golf Tournament to a Global Competition

The BMW Golf Cup has evolved into one of the world’s largest amateur golf tournament series, tracing its origins to the BMW Invitation Tournament in the United Kingdom.

The competition initially operated as a British initiative for five years before expanding internationally. Over the decades, it has developed into a major global amateur golf circuit.

According to BMW, the tournament series now encompasses approximately 1,000 qualifying tournaments involving around 100,000 players across as many as 40 countries.

National qualifying competitions determine which golfers progress to the BMW Golf Cup World Final, where individual titles are contested across three categories.

The format provides amateur players with an opportunity to compete internationally while representing their respective countries, an experience usually associated with professional sporting championships.

India Champions Prepare for South Africa World Final

For the Indian edition, competitors are divided into two handicap categories: Category A for golfers with handicaps of up to 12 and Category B for those with handicaps between 13 and 28.

Winners from the regional tournaments advance to the National Final, where the champions of the two categories qualify for the international competition.

With the domestic championship concluded, attention now turns to South Africa, where Bhujle and Mahajan will compete against amateur golfers from around the world in March 2027.

For the two Indian champions, the journey from regional qualification to international competition represents a significant sporting achievement. Their participation also highlights the growing reach of organised amateur golf in India, offering players opportunities to compete beyond domestic fairways and test their skills against an international field.
