Ladakh: Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), the maker of BharatBenz trucks and buses, has inaugurated a new sales, service and spares facility in Leh, Ladakh, operated in partnership with PPS Trucking, as the commercial vehicle manufacturer looks to improve aftersales support across one of India’s most demanding operating regions.
Located at Phey Village along NH-1 at an altitude of approximately 11,550 feet above sea level, the 20,000 sq. ft. facility will cater to commercial vehicles operating across Leh, Kargil, Drass and areas near the Leh-China border.
BharatBenz and PPS Trucking describe the centre as India’s highest-altitude commercial vehicle repair facility.
The workshop is positioned on the Leh-Srinagar-Uri Highway and is expected to serve trucks involved in stone-crusher operations, road construction projects, including work undertaken by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and the transportation of communication tower infrastructure.
Focus on reducing downtime
Commercial vehicle operators in Ladakh have traditionally faced long journeys to reach authorised workshops and secure genuine replacement parts, adding both time and cost when a truck develops a problem.
The new centre is intended to shorten repair turnaround times by providing trained technicians, diagnostic equipment and a stock of BharatBenz spare parts closer to areas where the vehicles are operating.
That becomes particularly important in Ladakh, where a breakdown is rarely accompanied by the luxury of a workshop conveniently around the corner.
The facility has three fully equipped service bays and has the capacity to handle more than 1,400 vehicles annually, according to the company.
It is also equipped with advanced diagnostic systems and modern service tools and will offer 24×7 roadside assistance for vehicles experiencing breakdowns.
A team of more than 20 trained technicians will operate the facility.
BharatBenz targets difficult operating conditions
Commenting on the expansion in Northern India, Rajiv Chaturvedi, President & Chief Business Officer, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, said, “At BharatBenz, customer success is built on vehicle uptime, reliability, and service accessibility. Customers operating in Ladakh and adjoining border regions face unique challenges, including harsh weather conditions, difficult terrain, and remote operating environments. With the inauguration of this new service and spare parts facility, we are bringing world-class aftersales support closer to our customers, ensuring faster repairs, easy access to genuine parts, and expert technical assistance. This investment reinforces our commitment to maximising customer productivity, reducing downtime, and delivering a superior ownership experience in one of India’s most challenging yet strategically important markets.”
Commercial vehicles operating in Ladakh routinely contend with steep gradients, low temperatures, high altitude and difficult terrain, placing additional demands on engines, braking systems and other mechanical components.
The workshop will particularly support BharatBenz tippers used in stone-crushing and construction operations across the region.
The company said its tippers are built using high-strength steel and are extensively deployed in Leh’s stone-crushing industry, which supplies material for road and building construction.
Infrastructure activity drives demand
Ladakh also has mineral resources including borax, marble, cement-grade limestone and granite, while continuing infrastructure and construction activity is creating demand for commercial vehicles and ready-mix concrete operations.
Infrastructure development and improved border connectivity have increased the importance of dependable truck fleets in the region, making vehicle availability a significant consideration for contractors and fleet operators.
The Leh workshop is therefore designed not only as a repair centre but as part of a broader aftersales network intended to keep commercial vehicles operational in areas where distances between major service centres can be considerable.
Rajiv Sanghvi, Managing Director, PPS Trucking, said, “We are proud to inaugurate India’s highest-altitude commercial vehicle service facility at Leh, supporting customers in a region known for extreme weather and challenging terrain. By continuously strengthening our infrastructure and expanding our network, we are bringing timely and reliable service closer to customers wherever they operate. Through this endeavour, we aim to deliver a best-in-class ownership experience, maximise vehicle uptime, and enable greater productivity and profitability for our customers.”
Driver facilities included
The workshop also includes dedicated rest areas and customer amenities for drivers while their vehicles are being serviced.
PPS Trucking said a substantial inventory of spare parts will be maintained in the region to help reduce waiting periods for repairs and improve vehicle turnaround times.
For BharatBenz, the Leh facility extends its aftersales reach into a region where commercial vehicles play a central role in road building, construction and logistics. As infrastructure development continues across Ladakh, proximity to service centres and spare parts could become almost as important to fleet operators as the trucks themselves.
