Chennai: Michelin has launched the Michelin Primacy 5 in India, marking the debut of the company’s latest premium passenger car tyre and, more significantly, its first Michelin passenger car tyre manufactured in the country for Indian consumers.
Designed for sedans and SUVs, the Primacy 5 is intended for internal combustion engine, hybrid and electric vehicles. Michelin says the tyre has been developed and tested on vehicles commonly driven in India and benchmarked against competing products, with performance validated by an independent testing agency.
The company claims the Primacy 5 can deliver wet braking distances more than 8 metres shorter than leading competitors when new and 9 metres shorter when worn. Michelin also claims a four-metre shorter dry braking distance compared with competing tyres in the same category.
In addition to braking performance, Michelin says the Primacy 5 offers an 8% longer lifespan than its predecessor, the Michelin Primacy 4ST.
The tyre uses the company’s EverTread and EverGrip technologies, which Michelin says are designed to maintain grip performance through the tyre’s usable life without sacrificing longevity.
Michelin highlights India manufacturing push
Speaking at the launch event in Chennai, Shantanu Deshpande, Managing Director, Michelin India, said:

Ride comfort another focus
Michelin is also positioning comfort as one of the Primacy 5’s main strengths. The company claims the tyre achieved a 9% better comfort score compared with the average of leading competitors in the same segment.
A redesigned tread pattern is intended to reduce tyre noise while maintaining robustness, an increasingly relevant consideration as quieter electric powertrains make road and tyre noise rather harder to ignore.
The Primacy 5 has also been engineered to handle the additional weight and higher torque typically associated with modern electric vehicles while maintaining durability and ride comfort.
Michelin describes the tyre as suitable for both ICE and electric vehicles, with particular emphasis on EV applications.
Energy efficiency improves over Primacy 4ST
According to Michelin, the Primacy 5 delivers a 6.5% improvement in energy efficiency compared with the Michelin Primacy 4ST.
Lower rolling resistance can contribute to reduced fuel consumption in combustion-engine vehicles and potentially improve driving range in electric vehicles, although actual results will vary depending on the vehicle, road conditions and driving behaviour.
The Primacy 5 has also received the “Tyre of the Year 2025” title at the Tyre Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence.
Sales begin in August 2026
The Michelin Primacy 5 will go on sale in India starting August 2026 through all Michelin Tyres & Service stores and approximately 800 Michelin authorised dealers across the country.
For Michelin, the launch represents more than the arrival of another premium tyre. Local production of a passenger car tyre brings the company closer to India’s rapidly expanding premium and electrified vehicle market, where braking performance, efficiency and durability are increasingly being weighed alongside the traditional question every tyre eventually faces: how comfortably it handles the next imperfect stretch of road.
