NHAI Summer Internship 2026 Draws 423 Students, Including 341 From IITs and NITs

India’s expanding national highway programme is creating fresh career opportunities for civil engineering students, with the National Highways Authority of India recruiting about 100 engineering professionals annually and hosting 423 interns under its expanded Summer Internship Programme 2026.

According to NHAI, the growing scale of infrastructure development has renewed interest in civil engineering, particularly among students at the Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and other leading technical institutions.

The authority recruits approximately 100 engineering professionals every year for technical positions through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, or GATE. Selected candidates, including graduates from IITs, NITs and other institutions, are appointed as Deputy Managers.

The recruitment process provides engineering graduates with a direct route into the planning and development of India’s national highway network. It also reflects a broader shift towards infrastructure-related employment as highway, bridge and transport projects expand across the country.

NHAI has sought to strengthen this pipeline through a structured internship programme formally launched in December 2025. The initiative began with a one-month Winter Internship for civil engineering students and was later expanded to include a six-month Term Internship.

Interns receive a stipend of ₹20,000 per month, making the programme a relatively well-paid opportunity for students seeking practical exposure to large infrastructure projects. For engineering students accustomed to spending long hours with drawings, calculations and project reports, the field experience adds a useful dose of asphalt and reality.

The Summer Internship Programme was expanded significantly in 2026, with 423 students from different academic streams joining 125 NHAI field offices and 51 functional verticals at the authority’s headquarters.

The participants included 59 students from IITs and 282 from NITs. Together, students from the two groups accounted for 341 of the total interns, indicating strong participation from some of India’s leading engineering institutions.

The interns are expected to gain exposure to the functioning of highway projects, field offices and specialised departments at NHAI headquarters. Such programmes can help students understand how classroom concepts are applied to project preparation, construction oversight and infrastructure management.

Alongside recruitment and internships, NHAI has introduced measures aimed at strengthening the professional environment for civil engineers and consultants.

These include fixed-cost Detailed Project Reports, or DPRs, intended to provide fair and professional compensation for engineering services. The authority has also introduced competitive remuneration frameworks designed to attract experienced professionals as DPR and supervision consultants.

The initiatives come as India continues to invest heavily in road connectivity and national highway development, increasing demand for engineers with expertise in project design, construction, supervision and maintenance.

By combining merit-based recruitment with structured internships and consulting reforms, NHAI is attempting to build a more consistent talent pipeline for the highway sector. The long-term test will be whether these opportunities can translate growing student interest into the skilled workforce required to deliver safer, more efficient and technically sound national highways.
