Mumbai: If innovation had a speedometer, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) would currently be deep into triple digits. The homegrown auto and farm equipment giant has announced a remarkable 20x surge in its patent portfolio over the past decade, underlining its aggressive push towards research, development, and future-ready mobility solutions.
From a modest 56 granted patents in FY16, the company has accelerated to an impressive 1,334 patents by FY26. That’s not just growth—it’s a full-blown innovation marathon, with M&M clearly refusing to hit the brakes.
The company’s cumulative patent applications have also climbed to 2,728 as of March 2026, reflecting a consistent pipeline of ideas moving from drawing boards to reality. Even more noteworthy is the dramatic improvement in its patent conversion rate—from just 8% in FY16 to over 65% today. In simple terms, more ideas are not just being imagined, but actually making it to the finish line.
Breaking down the numbers, around 60% of these patents belong to M&M’s automotive business, while the remaining 40% are rooted in its farm sector—proving that innovation at Mahindra isn’t limited to highways, but extends right into the fields as well. The portfolio also includes contributions from its EV arm, Mahindra Electric Automobile Limited, highlighting the company’s growing focus on electrification and sustainable mobility.
This surge in intellectual property is more than just a numbers game—it reflects M&M’s expanding R&D muscle and its ambition to create technologically immersive and future-forward products for customers. Whether it’s smarter SUVs or more efficient tractors, innovation seems to be deeply embedded in the company’s DNA.
Adding more shine to its already gleaming trophy cabinet, M&M has also bagged several prestigious accolades over the past year. These include the CII IP Award for Best Patent Portfolio, recognition among India’s Top 50 Innovative Companies 2025, the CII National Award for Industry-Academia Partnership, the Questel IP Excellence Award, and honours at the CMO Asia Awards 2025.
In an era where the race for innovation is as fierce as the race for market share, Mahindra & Mahindra seems to be comfortably leading from the front—proving that when it comes to ideas, they’re not just thinking big, they’re thinking fast.
