Tata Harrier and Safari Launched with Hyperion Turbo Petrol Punch and Record-Breaking Efficiency

Mumbai: After years of polite but persistent “Diesel or nothing” vibes, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited has finally given the people what they’ve been waiting for—petrol-powered Harrier and Safari SUVs. And not just any petrol, but the all-new 1.5L Hyperion Turbo-GDi, launched at an introductory starting price of ₹12.89 lakh for the Harrier and ₹13.29 lakh for the Safari (ex-showroom, New Delhi). Yes, your favourite big Tata SUVs can now sip petrol—and do it efficiently.

In fact, the Harrier Petrol has already made a pit stop in the India Book of Records, earning recognition for “Maximum Fuel Efficiency Achieved by a Petrol Manual SUV in 12 Hours.” Not bad for a large SUV that looks like it prefers gym memberships over yoga mats.

Petrol Power, Without Petrolhead Anxiety

At the heart of both SUVs is Tata’s new 1.5L Hyperion Turbo-GDi petrol engine, producing 170 PS and 280 Nm. That’s enough power to keep highway overtakes stress-free and city drives surprisingly calm. Thanks to AI- and ML-based optimisation, the engine continuously adapts to driving conditions—basically thinking faster than most co-passengers offering driving advice.

The result? Segment-leading fuel efficiency, best-in-class NVH levels, and a refined driving experience that works equally well for daily office runs and long weekend getaways. In short, it’s petrol power without the usual petrol guilt.

Safety: Still a Tata Stronghold

Despite the new powertrain, safety remains untouched—and uncompromised. Both the Harrier and Safari Petrol have secured a perfect 5-star rating from Bharat NCAP across all variants, making the entire Harrier–Safari portfolio fully 5-star certified. Big SUVs, big confidence.

A Cabin That Thinks It’s a Private Theatre

Step inside and you’ll quickly realise Tata has borrowed inspiration from home theatres, not dashboards. The highlight is a 36.9 cm (14.5-inch) cinematic infotainment display powered by Samsung Neo QLED, paired with Dolby Atmos and a 10-speaker JBL system. It’s immersive enough to make traffic jams slightly more tolerable.

Segment-first features include:

  • Vision-X E-IRVM with built-in dual dash cam & DVR
  • ClearView Dual Camera Washer
  • VisionSync Memory ORVMs with auto reverse dip
  • Intelli-Start with Climate Sync

Basically, the SUVs now remember your preferences better than your streaming apps.

Design: Still Bold, Now More Indulgent

Rooted in Tata’s global design philosophy and Land Rover DNA, the Harrier and Safari continue to command attention with their muscular stance and assertive road presence. The popular Red #Dark Edition returns for both SUVs, while the Harrier also introduces the striking Nitro Crimson shade.

Inside, luxury takes centre stage:

  • Carnelian Red & Black cabin for Safari Red #DARK
  • Oyster White and Titan Brown interiors for Harrier
  • Features like Boss Mode, ventilated & powered front seats, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, and R19 alloys

It’s premium, but without trying too hard to look premium.

What Tata Has to Say

Speaking on the launch, Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said the new petrol powertrain builds on the legacy of over 2.5 lakh Harriers and Safaris already on Indian roads.

According to him, the Hyperion engine enhances the Harrier’s bold personality with added performance, while giving the Safari a quieter, more serene driving character—without losing its prestigious, go-anywhere appeal.

The Bottom Line

With the arrival of the Harrier and Safari Petrol, Tata Motors has neatly filled a long-standing gap in its SUV lineup. These are big, bold SUVs that now offer petrol efficiency, advanced tech, 5-star safety, and a genuinely premium experience—all without losing their rugged charm.
